Michael's obituary
Michael John Illies
February 3rd 1965- November 8th 2024
After a courageous battle with cancer, Michael (Mike) Illies, passed away on Friday November 8th surrounded by his loved ones. Mike was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota and moved with his family to Toronto, Canada in 1973. He proudly served in the United States Army, company B 57th Signal Battalion, from 1982-1986 and was recognized for his achievements as a telecommunication center specialist. Mike often fondly reflected on his time spent in the army as some of the happiest times of his life. After spending time in the Army, Mike worked around the United States before returning back to Canada where he worked hard in both the printing and sales industries. Following this, Mike was a head caretaker with the TDSB for many years. Mike had a strong entrepreneurial mindset and was frequently coming up with new and exciting ideas. While Mike was dedicated to all the work he did throughout his life, his greatest work was the care and devotion he gave to raising his twin daughters.
Known for his gentle and kind nature, Mike made lasting impressions on everyone he met. Ever the optimist, Mike's love for life was contagious. He taught those around him not just through words, but through his actions about what it means to navigate life with compassion, humility, and humour. His passion, kindness, and zest for life was impossible to ignore. His interests and hobbies were as vibrant as his spirit, and his enthusiasm for music, dancing, and horse racing/handicapping brought him and those around him so much joy.
Mike will be deeply missed and remembered lovingly by his daughters Holly and Mikaela, his siblings Fred, Tim, and Jodi, his nieces and nephews Leah, Jenna, Krista, Kevin, Jeffery, Samantha, Scott, Dylan, and Peyton, his friends, and his grandkitties Romulus and Alfalfa. Predeceased by his mother Carol and father Alan. The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to his care team at Princess Margret Cancer Centre and Oak ridges Hospice of Durham for the care and compassion they provided Mike during his cancer treatment and final days of his life.
A celebration of life/ 60th birthday celebration will be held for Mike on Saturday February 1st at Whitby Columbus Club, 133 Brock St N, at 3pm. All who loved Mike are welcome to come and share, sing, and laugh as we commemorate his beautiful life and spirit.
