Michael's obituary
Michael Francis Watson, 71, of Matawan, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2025, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
Michael was born on June 11, 1954, in Troy, New York, to Francis and Patricia Watson (née LaBombard). The fourth of seven children, Michael moved with his family to Matawan at the age of nine and made it his home for the rest of his life. From the Marc Woods neighborhood to his school years and beyond, Michael built friendships that lasted a lifetime. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people, and over the years he formed meaningful relationships with neighbors, local businesses, and friends throughout the community he loved so deeply.
Michael was many things to many people: a devoted son, a loving brother, a proud uncle, a loyal cousin, and a steadfast friend. He took great pride in his work as a painter and paper hanger and in his service as District One Republican Committeeman for Matawan Borough. Michael was also known for the simple joys that brought him happiness—good coffee, a fine cigar, and familiar faces. He could often be found at the Matawan Starbucks, where conversation came easily and friendships were always welcome. He cherished his time away as well, especially his retreats to the Wilson House in East Dorset and peaceful days spent at the beach in Long Branch.
Michael’s quick wit, memorable puns, and infectious smile were unmistakable. He had a gift for listening and a way of making people feel seen and valued. Those who knew him knew they could count on him—whether for encouragement, a laugh, or quiet understanding. With the help of Bill W., Michael found strength in community and, in turn, helped countless others, leaving an impact that will continue to be felt for years to come.
Michael was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Pat Watson. He is survived by his siblings: Christine Whelan (Jack), Kathleen Hourihan (Jeremiah), Patricia Watson, Nancy Watson, Peter Watson (Theresa), and Thomas Watson; along with many beloved nieces and nephews, dear friends, and all those whose lives were made better by knowing him.
A celebration of Michael’s life is being planned for late January 2026. Details will be shared as arrangements are finalized.
