Michael's obituary
At Michael’s request, there will be no visitation and no funeral.
Michael was born on February 8, 1958 in Fargo, North Dakota to Dr. Matt and Phyllis (Gillespie) Ehlen. He grew up in a close knit family and cherished his memories at the family cabin in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. Some of his happiest reflections were being out on the water fishing for sunnies and frying them up for dinner.
In 1978, Michael met the love of his life, Julie Mortenson, in a watercolor class at Moorehead State University. The two were married on December 9, 1983 in Seattle, Washington. They lived as true artists and shared a passion for nature, friends, fine food, and music.
They chose to come back to Minnesota to be near family and soon started one of their own. Always farmers at heart, Michael and Julie purchased land in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota and started their own little hobby farm. He was a keeper of the land and found serenity in nature. The family raised many chickens, dogs, koi fish, birds, cats, and enjoyed a multitude of wildlife throughout the years.
Those who knew him appreciated him for his humour and ability to become fast friends with anyone. He always had an embellished story to share and smile on his face. He will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, and expressive artist.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents. Michael is survived by his mother, Phyllis; wife, Julie; daughters, Sophia Ehlen and Isabella (Ty) Young; and five siblings: Mark (Lynn) Ehlen, Julie (David) Van Voorhis, Thomas Ehlen, Paula (Jesse VanVlaenderen) Ehlen, and Dan (Gretchen) Ehlen.
