I can't believe it's been three years now since Mike's passing. He is greatly missed.
Man, he would have been happy with his Golden Eagles advancing to the Sweet 16 today.  He would have also been very sympathetic to my Jayhawks choking in the second round.  We would have been talking a lot, and I miss that a lot.  I'm sure he's smiling down from above.  And probably with a beer... assuming that's allowed.

I know he is making pars and birdies in heaven.  I remember him most from the Marquette golf outings.  He attended and was always full of energy with smiles to share.

Mike brought a smile to everyone he met.  I was fortunate enough to be his college roommate after we met at Tower Hall, in a campus apartment.  I will always look at our college days as some of the best times, and the joy that Mike brought carries on with me.  I will miss you my friend,  RIP.

This is the last picture Mike…
2023, Pacific Beach, San Diego, CA, USA
This is the last picture Mike sent me. He was at a Marquette Basketball 🏀 watch party. He ran into a friend of mine named Gene McDonald (pictured). Mike would send me pictures from time to time when he ran into someone who was a friend of mine. I will miss that. Mike was a true original and his loyalty to his family and friends is unrivaled. Mikes legacy will live on through all of us. RIP Xavier! (That was my nickname for him).

Beautiful ceremony. I especially loved the road trip to college story. Always to approachable and engaging in high school, Mike clearly carried that san warm on throughout his live and that’s also reflected in his family.

One can hope to leave such a legacy of love and positivity.

Rest in peace my friend.

My Heart goes out to the family. Mike Ex was a close family friend of our family. Mike knew my dad, Tom Jeter, since childhood. We have had spent a lot of time seeing Mike and his family. He was always full of laughter and smiles. My family and I will miss him dearly. Much Love, Caroline Jeter (Tom's eldest daughter).

      Ecks Family,

I remember meeting Sammy (Samantha) through Alpha Delta Pi at USD. Eventually, we became roommates and I met the whole Ecks family. The entire family, especially Mr. (Mike) Ecks was very kind to me. I fondly remember when we first moved into our apartment and they all came down to get dinner together and invited me. I offered to pay for my meal or pay him back but Mr. (Mike) Ecks was very generous and paid for my meal and would not let me pay him back. I will always cherish this memory (among many) and his extended kindness towards me (as well as his entire family). We all laughed and bonded that night. That was very nice of them to include me since my family was six hours away in Arizona. They were always amazing and the last time I saw everyone was during the Baccalaureate mass at USD. I could see the love he had for his family, especially Mrs. (Susan) Ecks.  They were like my second family during my time at USD. This still feels surreal and I am so sorry again for your loss. 💙💙

Mike's Legacy - A Guardian Angel's Love

I am sorry I can't be there today,

A little mishap, I must convey.

Tripping over rescue dogs in the rain,

A beat-up face, and a throbbing brain.

But I can picture Mike's smiling face,

Hear his laughter, his warm embrace.

For Mike, family meant the world,

His love for them, forever unfurled.

Susie, his wife, his rock, his muse,

Their love, a flame that would never lose.

Summer and Sammy, his daughters dear,

His guiding light, always near.

Mike loved his dogs, dirty paws and all,

His dedication was never small

The Padres, his team, Mike's game of choice,

Cheering with passion, a familiar voice.

When JDRF struck, a mission he embraced,

Fighting for a cure, with love encased.

His heart, so big, it overflowed,

Supporting others, a selfless ode.

Mike's friendship, a treasure, beyond compare,

Larger than life, always there to care.

He made time for us, no matter the demand,

A faithful companion, a helping hand.

Now, he's ascended, to heaven's door,

A guardian angel forevermore.

Watching over his girls with superpowers untold,

Guiding them through life, as days unfold.

Though he left us suddenly, way too soon,

Our disbelief, like an echoing tune.

Mike's presence, a legacy that will forever thrive,

In our hearts, his spirit will forever survive.

So, let's celebrate his life, with laughter and tears,

Reminiscing the moments, cherishing the years.

For Mike, our dear friend, a true guiding light,

His memory shines on, in our darkest night.

(With love from Mike's favorite Aussie mate)

First, we’re so sorry for you, Susie, Sammy and Summer. Mike was such a great person who genuinely cared about the people around him and always spoke glowingly of all of you. Both of us knew him from the U-T when we all worked there together and kept in contact since. At the beginning of the year, we had both been laid off from our jobs and Mike was actively trying to make connections for us to help us land new ones. During college basketball season he and I would match notes on how Marquette and my team, Kansas, were doing. This year with Marquette going deep into the tournament he was thinking of going to NYC to watch them play along with some of his college friends. That’s where our discussion ended, and I/we were shocked at the horrible news. We are sorry to have to miss the services for him, but we wish you all the best in dealing with the devastating loss of such a truly fantastic individual.

Mike was always the happy guy. We had such fun together as couples in San Francisco before he and Suzy had their girls. Mike is terribly missed already. His positivity and fun I remember fondly. Also his keen interest in saving $$$. Cracked me up. I loved Mike!!

Mike was the epitome of a nice guy. He clearly loved his girls and family as he beamed whenever he spoke of them or I saw him with them. My condolences to you all. His spirit and smile really will live through you… but still so hard to say goodbye.
With love and prayers for peace and healing, Jane Mitchell

Dad’s 58th Birthday, We always loved going out to dinner together each birthday, getting a cake (although dad’s favorite dessert was key lime pie) and singing happy birthday. Wishing you were here dad to celebrate your 59th. 💙

Doug Gellert
2007, Seattle, WA, USA
Way back in 2007, I moved to Seattle from San Diego. Why, as many Seattlites would ask me with a puzzled look? Leaving sunny San Diego for rainy Seattle and the PNW? I would explain to folks that after made a few business trips to Seattle and seeing the incredible mountain ranges, thick green forests everywhere, clear lakes, and an incredible archipelago just off shore, I made the move.

I made the move to Seattle with no connections in the area. My former work connections through a Seattle-based company my former employer acquired had largely moved on themselves. Essentially, I knew no one. This is where Mike comes into the picture. He immediately and graciously introduced me to his sister and brother-in-law who lived in West Seattle. I remember his brother-in-law was a sports radio personality and believe they eventually move to Philly or somewhere East.

Shortly after the introduction, I was invited to a house BBQ at Mike's sister's house and was introduced to other folks.

This story is about the kind of person Mike was. Always willing to help others and he took a genuine interest in my move and next career steps. In addition, I found Mike to have a great sense of humor and a keen mind while I worked along side him at the Union-Tribune. While we didn't connect a lot since I've been in Seattle, we did reach out to each other periodically to stay connected and share stories about our careers, politics and adventures.

Blessings to Susie, Samantha and Summer and the Ecks family. Mike will be missed.

I deserved with Mike for a decade through JDRF. Initially, I was leading him. It didn't take long before he was leading me. He walked through life with eyes wide open, always looking for connections and ways to lift anyone around him up. I am a better human being for having had his example and friendship in this life. I know words bring scarce comfort many days, but please know how much he loved each of you, something he was never shy about expressing to those around him. Thank to for choosing to share him .
