Background

Mike lived much of his life in service of others. Most recently, he volunteered with the Ceres Community Project and with Harvest for the Hungry, where he was also a member of the board.

Harvest for the Hungry

Relying exclusively on volunteer labor, the Harvest for the Hungry Garden delivers organically grown produce each week to several local hunger programs: FISH of Santa Rosa (an emergency food pantry), Elisha's Pantry, The Living Room (a drop-in center for homeless women & children), Bethlehem Towers (low income senior housing), Redwood Gospel Mission (an emergency shelter, hot meal site and recovery program for the homeless) and the Food For Thought AIDS Food Bank (serving people with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses).

In 2018 Harvest for the Hungry harvested over 25,368 lbs of fresh produce - tomatoes, carrots, beets, squash, fruit, lettuce, leafy greens, basil, onions and garlic - grown on a 1-1/4 acre parcel owned by Christ Church United Methodist, all thanks to the efforts of their dedicated volunteer crew.

The Harvest Garden boasts 30 no-till beds devoted to growing organic produce using drip irrigation. The Garden also includes a small fruit orchard, Wildlife Habitat areas, Medicinal Plant Garden and Backyard Demonstration Garden.

The Garden also offers workshops on vegetable gardening, integrated pest control, native habitats, fruit tree pruning and much more.

♥ Supporting individuals dealing with serious illness with free and low-cost, delivered and nutrient-rich prepared meals, nutrition education, and a community of caring.

♥ Involving young people as volunteer gardeners and chefs, giving them direct, hands-on experience of the difference that fresh, healthy foods and community make, and of their own capacity to contribute.

♥ Educating the broader community, including health professionals, about the connection between fresh, healthy food, strong social networks, healing and wellness.

♥ Connecting people of all ages and from all walks of life to one another, and to their value as an integral part of the community.
