Michael's obituary

Michael William Bishop—an enigma of talent, wit, humor, passion, compassion and challenges—died on Saturday, October 12th, at his home in Evanston, Illinois. Michael was an architect, real estate executive, artist, athlete, father, son, brother and companion. He saw the world in many colors and navigated through grey skies to hold tight to sunshine, albeit illusive towards his end. He recognized brilliance and talent in others, often validating friends and family, as they had never been seen before. His ability to keenly tune-in was driven by an insatiable curiosity that fed his intellect, social engagement, lively conversation and humor.

As a young man, Michael was a great athlete in track and football as well as an artist. His 110-metre, 14.3-seconds high-hurdles record set his senior year in 1980, still stands today at Adlai Stevenson High School. Football shaped him to be a caddy-in-demand at Chicago’s north shore country clubs. In addition to earning money for college, Michael developed a passion for golf and went on to play throughout his life. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture at the University of Illinois in 1984.

His athleticism later turned to running triathlons, and going on ski trips with friends and family. Michael’s love of art was linked to a legacy of artistic talent from grandparents on down to his kids. He spent time sketching and drawing with his children, collecting art (including his Father’s) and occasionally squeaking out his own inspired creations. Often his creations involved working with the earth to grow gardens and working with his hands to design and build kid-forts, model airplanes and an occasional frosted pound cake. Appreciation for land inspired Mike to serve for a couple of years on the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Open Lands Associate Board. He also served on the board of Conservation Resource Alliance in Traverse City, Michigan.

Michael’s professional life began as an architect at The Austin Company. He made his mark on the skyline of Chicago designing a building that was constructed in the early 1980’s at 415 N. LaSalle. A gifted salesman, Michael’s career shifted to commercial real estate where he was an award-wining broker for firms Tanguay-Burke-Stratton, UGL-Equis Corporation and Newmark Knight Frank. In addition, he was the co-founding Managing Principal of CRESA Partners Chicago.

Along with intense productive and creative adventures in life, Michael was subject to depression of which he battled for several years along with addiction. He chose to end his life just days before his 57th birthday—a colorful conundrum unraveling his way to peace.

Michael deeply loved his three children who survive him: Jack, Olivia and Duke Bishop. He is also survived by his sister, Lisa (Bishop) Zalapukis, brother-in-law Chuck Zalapukis, nephew Michael Zalapukis, and former wife and mother of his children, Lindy Dingeman. He was preceded in death by his mother Gloria (Urban) Bishop, and father Henry David Bishop. A memorial service will be held for Michael at the Elawa Farm Hay Barn (1401 Middlefork Drive), Lake Forest, Illinois, on Monday, 11/25, 3pm-4pm.and extend their deepest sympathies to all saddened by his loss
