Michael's obituary
Michael Birdsong, affectionately known as “Mike,” was born on June 13th, 1959, to the late Robbie (Witherspoon) and Luther Birdsong, on the Army base of Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He was called home on August 21st, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and dedication to his family, faith, and work.
From an early age, Michael showed a deep spiritual connection and could always be found in church with his mother. His love for the Lord led him to actively participate in Sunday School, prayer meetings, and leading songs at church events. His nurturing spirit and passion for worship remained a cornerstone of his life.
Michael was a proud graduate of the Arlington High School class of 1978 and went on to pursue his dreams with a passion for education. Although he secretly wished to be a third-grade teacher, he chose a different path, enrolling in cosmetology school. This choice led him to become one of Indianapolis’ most sought-after hairstylists, specializing in women’s hair growth, Jheri curls, and natural hairstyles. His work in the beauty industry was not just a career but a testament to his meticulous attention to detail and care for his clients. After overcoming health challenges, he retired in 2022, but left behind a lasting impression on the many people he helped throughout the years.
Michael's life was filled with many roles beyond being a talented beautician. He worked diligently in bookbinding, culinary kitchens, and floor detailing, and wherever he worked, his pleasant demeanor and hard-working nature made him a joy to be around.
Perhaps one of Michael’s most beloved roles was being the “favorite uncle” – the life of the party who could always be counted on for a laugh, a dance, or a well-timed joke. He had a knack for bringing joy to any occasion and was a loving, caring individual whom anyone would want to be around. His infectious energy will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
In 2003, Michael faced personal struggles and overcame the odds of addiction through the transformative Twelve-Step Program at The Salvation Army AARC. This journey of recovery led him back to his spiritual roots, where he rededicated his life to Christ at New Life Tabernacle Holiness Church under the guidance of the late Elder Alvin Bond. Michael continued his spiritual journey at Bread of Life Church Of God In Christ, where he received believers’ baptism and the infilling of the Holy Ghost. Known affectionately as “Deacon Birdsong,” Michael was committed to serving in his church and helping wherever he could. His final spiritual home was at Rehoboth Worship Center under Apostle Christopher L. Cunningham.
Professionally, Michael worked for Walgreens for 22 years, where he became a beloved figure to both customers and colleagues alike. His exceptional service earned him the “Most Competitive Sales” award, and he later became a licensed pharmacy technician and assistant manager, positions he held until 2023. His work at Walgreens was not just a job, but an extension of his caring and giving nature. He was truly the man everyone loved to see.
Michael is preceded in death by his parents, Robbie and Luther Birdsong; his sister, Rebecca Birdsong; brothers, Joel Birdsong of Mississippi and Terryon D. Birdsong; and step-sister, Contina Norman. He leaves to cherish his memory his brothers, Christopher and Rickey Birdsong; stepbrothers, Arthur Spain and Jarvis Johnson; stepsisters, Otha Dugan and Jeanette Roberts; son, Michael C. Birdsong (Bettye Curry); godson, Gabriel Jordan (Dawnita); his best friends, Tiffany Johnson, Marsha Harris, Stacy McGuire, Luther Callier, and Chris Webb; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, hair customers, and all the wonderful people he called family.
Michael Birdsong’s life was one of faith, love, hard work, and laughter. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him, and his legacy of kindness, generosity, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
Rest in peace, Michael. Your work on earth is done, but your spirit lives on forever.
