Michael Thomas Avery

February 15, 1952 - August 30, 2023

Former Nebraska State Senator and former Gretna Mayor Michael T. "Mike" Avery passed away August 30, 2023 in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 71 years. He was born in Newcastle, Wyoming but spent much of his childhood in Crawford, Nebraska. In 1971 he walked on as a Husker Football Player at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. After graduating he moved to Gretna NE with his former wife Candy Avery where they raised their 2 sons and began a life of service to his community. He served 2 terms as Mayor and went on to win a senate seat representing the 3rd District, Sarpy County in the Nebraska State Legislature. He was also an elected member of the Gretna School Board and The Learning Community Council among many other service positions prior to having a stroke in 2018 and many setbacks to follow.

Michael is preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Avery, Lois Hudson and sister Tammy Comstock.

He is survived by his children Brandon (April) Avery and Shawn (Maureen) Avery; grandsons Brock Avery, Wyatt Avery, William Avery; siblings Douglas (Beth) Avery, Timothy (Lynette) Avery, Michele Bartlett, Mike (Gloria) Hudson, and Jerry Hudson; nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

A VISITATION will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gretna, from 10am to 11am on Friday September 15, 2023, with a FUNERAL SERVICE beginning at 11am and a luncheon to follow. A family burial service will take place in Gretna after the services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for later designation. Remembrances may be shared at www.everloved.com.
