In lieu of flowers

Please consider a contribution to Mike Avery Memorial Fund.

Background

Mike Avery passed away August 30th 2023 surrounded by family and loved ones.

He is finally free from his suffering. 5 years ago he had a stroke while driving and was in a terrible accident. He had been fighting ever since. In and out of hospitals, trying to learn to walk again, bound to a wheelchair, trouble communicating, eating and other simple daily tasks that we sometimes take for granted.

A recent mini stroke forced hospice. His 2 sons did everything possible to make his last 5 years comfortable.

Mike was able to attend his son Shawns wedding and also hold his 3rd newest grandson. We are so incredibly grateful for that.

Prior to the accident Mike dedicated his life to serving his community. Here is a list of the ones we know.

Mayor of Gretna
Senator 3rd district
City Council
School boards
Douglas-Sarpy Learning Community Chair
Beta Sigma Psi Lutheran Fraternity
Dog training
Optimist Club
Game and parks- Biologist
Hunting and Fishing Guide
Founding member of Gretna Lutheran church
Helped open Gretna’s Library
Chamber of Commerce
Gretna Days Volunteer
UNO Booster
Fundraiser for various charities
such as Childhood Cancer Benefits and many more.

Mike was a man who found time to serve his community and help the people around him while also running his own construction company. We learned so much from him and he set an example for everyone to learn from.

Please join us at the service to celebrate his life and honor all the great things Mike Avery did to serve our community.

Thank you for your prayers and support during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been set up in his honor. The funds will go towards the church and a physical memorial located in Gretna that will honor his service to the community and inspire future generations.
