Mike's obituary
Michael "Mike" Anthony Chavez, 62, of Long Beach, CA, passed away on April 7, 2022 after a courageous battle with heart and lung issues. Mike was born on July 7, 1959 to Barbara Ann Lamons and Ernest Padilla Chavez in San Pedro, California. He spent his youth in "Pedro" (pronounced 'pea-dro' according to Mike) and considered it his second home after Long Beach.
In 1985, he met Chevy, and they wed in 1986, going on to have three children, Lisa, Michael Jr., and Mason. He also went on to have two grandchildren, Felix and Maximus, who meant the world to him. Mike was a force of nature, determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. His family meant everything to Mike and he always tried his best to support them. Anyone who knew Mike knew that he was the most loving grandfather, father, husband, and friend someone could ask for.
He spent years working as an electrical and aircraft technician, working for McDonnell Douglas, Hughes, and Boeing. One of his memorable achievements included helping build the C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. Later in life, he became a realtor, which he considered his "dream job," and worked as a realtor until his passing.
Mike was a big guy with a big heart and an even bigger laugh. On any normal day, you could find Mike doing kind things for everyone in his life including giving away concert tickets to friends, bringing colleagues food, or generously giving toys to the little ones in his life.
Mike was also a passionate music fan and could often be found at the best music concerts. His love of music ranged from all classic rock to classical. Mike told amazing stories of the concerts he went to including one where the Ramones opened for Sabbath and that (sadly) the Ramones were booed offstage (due to musical differences). He always mentioned that he felt bad for Joey Ramone that day.
Mike left behind his wife "Chevy" Chhaevy Chavez; his sons Michael Chavez Jr. and Mason Chavez; his daughter Lisa Harrison and her husband Bruce; his grandchildren Felix and Max; his father, Ernest Chavez; his half-brothers, Ernest Jr. and Dino Chavez; his sister, Tina Chavez; his niece, Shell Hernandez; his grandniece, Luna; and many half-siblings and cousins.
There will be a viewing and celebration of life on Monday, April 18th from 1:00pm-3:00pm at McKenzie Mortuary Services in Long Beach and virtual services for those who do not live in the area. The service will begin at 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to SPCA LA or a local animal shelter of your choice. Mike was a champion for animals and cared for many throughout his life.
