Mia's obituary

Mia Amari Sims

July 21, 2007 – July 27, 2025

Mia Amari Sims was born on July 21, 2007, in Jackson, Michigan, to Gabrielle Sims and Denzel Jenkins. From the very beginning, Mia was pure joy—a bright, beautiful spirit who filled every moment with love and light.

A vibrant soul, Mia’s love for Jesus, her family, and her community radiated through all she did. Known for her warm heart and deep compassion, she found happiness in life’s simple pleasures: strawberries, fashion, traveling, and shopping. A proud member of United Peoples Community Church, Mia sang in the choir and served as a youth leader in the children’s ministry, nurturing young hearts with grace and love.

Mia’s dedication extended beyond the church walls. She volunteered with the Salvation Army’s summer youth program, worked at Arbor Oaks Living Center, and supported children and families at Phoenix Child Care. She also served as a member of the City of Jackson Youth Council, where she demonstrated a strong commitment to leadership and civic engagement.

A 2025 graduate of Jackson High School and a certified esthetician, Mia had ambitious dreams for her future. She planned to study Children’s Psychology with a minor in Family Counseling, beginning her journey at Jackson College on a full scholarship and later transferring to Clark Atlanta University, a distinguished HBCU. Her life was a beautiful blend of purpose, passion, and promise.

Mia is survived by her loving parents, Gabrielle Sims and Denzel Jenkins; her siblings, Anthony “AJ”, Serenity, and Sa’Mayah Baker. She is preceded in death by her beloved brother, Maurice Sims.

She is also survived by her great-grandparents Kenneth Patton, Allen (Maryanne) Davis, and Marvin P. Jenkins, and is preceded in death by Larry (Ethel) Sims Sr., Lucille Patton, L. Jean Overall, and Lillian Jenkins.

Her grandparents include Kitrina & Larry Sims and Trisha Overall; she is preceded in death by Marvin M. Jenkins. She is also remembered by her great-uncle Major Overall and Earle Overall, and great-aunt Monica Overall; preceded in death by great-aunt Kelly (Mike) Doty.

Her uncles include Shaunta (Priscilla) Patton, Daniel (Semaj) Mahoney, Elijah Sims, and Elijah Jenkins. She is also survived by her aunt, Sabrina Monroe.

Cherished cousins include Deyette, India, Jaja, and Asia Patton; Damarre, Darrius, Elijah, Deshon, and Chris Taylor; Calvena, Sophia, Olivia, Cecilia, and Ila Mahoney; Major II, David, Donnie, Devin, and Darnell Overall; and a host of other cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Special mention to her close friends and extended family: Que’Saundra Johnson (aka Sissy), Hope Culver, Leayah Pierce, Kari Holmes, Jayshaun Page, Rhiana Jackson, and Keily Cortes.

Though Mia’s time on Earth was brief, her legacy of love, faith, and service will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
