Merritt Lewis Cooper (“Coop”), 77
Born July 4, 1948 – Passed July 13, 2025
Dubois, Pennsylvania
Merritt Lewis Cooper, lovingly known as “Coop,” passed away peacefully on July 13, 2025, in Dubois, Pennsylvania, at the age of 77.
Born on Independence Day, 1948, to Raymond and Eloise Cooper, Merritt graduated from Dubois Area High School in 1966. Shortly after, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served for seven years before being honorably discharged on March 1, 1973.
During his time in the Navy, Merritt welcomed two beautiful children with his then-wife Mary Cooper of Dubois: Laura Luce (Frank) and Shawn Cooper (Stephanie). Though their marriage ended, they remained close friends throughout his life. Mary, Laura, and Shawn all survive him.
Merritt worked for Rockwell International for 40 years, retiring in 2013. He spent his entire career alongside Mary’s sister, Peg, whom he cherished deeply. She preceded him in death.
On August 3, 1991, Merritt married the love of his life and best friend, Gladine Duttry. They shared 33 wonderful years of marriage filled with laughter, adventure, and love.
A proud and spirited resident of Gateway Towers in Dubois, Merritt was affectionately known as The Mayor of Gateway. A true firecracker, born on the Fourth of July, he had a booming voice, a contagious laugh, and a deep love for life. He enjoyed attending local baseball games, cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers, and traveling around Pennsylvania—especially to his favorite places: Benezette, Pittsburgh, and Parker Dam.
Above all, Merritt adored his family. He was a devoted and loving grandfather to Briana Whitman (Jake), Christina Cooper, Cassandra Cooper, and Talan Cooper—all of Dubois. He was also blessed with three great-grandchildren: Ryder Oaklyn, Aria Kamryn, and Brody Alexander, who brought him endless joy.
Merritt will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In honor of his life, the family will hold a celebration of life later this summer.
