Mercy's obituary

In Loving Memory of

Mercedita Realica Abraham

July 17, 1956 - January 11, 2023

Mercedita “Mercy” was born in Cavite City, Philippines as the eldest of three siblings of Domingo Eleazar Realica (deceased) and Virginia Pescasio Angkayan. She was a resident of Cicero, Illinois before moving to Hayward, California. She then moved to East Palo Alto and eventually to Bakersfield where she spent the rest of her later years. She is survived by her husband Emmanuel, daughter Celine, son Mark, granddaughter Mina, sister Susana and brother Napoleon.

After completing her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing in 1978 she worked briefly as a community nurse in various areas in the Philippines. She pursued her nursing career in the US from 1983 to 2006 as an OR Nurse in the Rehab, ER, and Trauma Department of St. Anthony Hospital, Cedar Pointe and Rehab & Nursing, Loyola University Hospital and Stanford University Hospital. She ventured in the care of the aged and terminally ill as Administrator and Caregiver of Lila Rose Ct. Manor from 2005 to 2018. Due to poor health she opted for a less demanding job as a Theory and Clinical Vocational Nurse Instructor at High Desert Medical College from 2019 to 2022.

Aptly nicknamed “Mercy”, as one of her elderly patients pointed out, she was popular with many patients and her hospital colleagues. She saved many lives, a testament to her dedication to providing quality care, hard work, unwavering patience and paying attention to details. She was a very knowledgeable and confident nurse working very closely with many surgeons who became good friends and advisors.

Mercy is not only known for being an outstanding nurse but also an excellent home cook. Mercy is self taught and gifted with the instinctive taste buds which she inherited from her father who was also a great cook. When friends and family visit her house, nobody leaves hungry. Friends and her work colleagues would often make requests for savory Filipino dishes only Mercy can cook. She took pride in her culinary skills and was always very happy to cook a feast for her friends and family. This is how she will be remembered by many.

Unfortunately Mercy was suffering for a long time and the debilitating side effects of her Type 2 diabetes resulted in advanced kidney failure. She finally succumbed to the disease and died peacefully at home in her sleep. It was her dying wish to be cremated, for her remains to join her father, and be put to rest in the family grave in Himlayang Caviteno, Philippines.

If any of her friends and family would like to pay her last respects and send her off with prayers, the funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 4th at 9:30 a.m. at Greenlawn Southwest 2739 Panama Lane, Bakersfield, CA 93313. For more information, please reach out to Mercy’s daughter, Celine, at (661) 616-8814.
