Melvin's obituary
Melvin was born in Portland, Ore. He touched the lives of many and is fondly remembered for always putting the needs of others before his own. He was quiet yet competitive, gentle yet strong, introverted yet social. He loved bringing people together whether to share a meal, play pickleball, or watch a UO Duck game. At his core, Melvin was a family man who worked hard in support of the family he adored.
Melvin was the youngest son of Henry and May Louie. He grew up in south east Portland with three siblings, attended Creston Grade School and graduated from Franklin High School. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from University of Oregon in 1975. In 1977, he married Mary. They were married for over 46 years and had four daughters, Kristena, Priscilla, Rebecca and Cynthia. In 2010, He became a Grandpa. He was proud to be called “Gung Gung” (maternal grandfather in Cantonese) and often babysat and cared for his eight grandchildren.
A pilar in the Chinese community, Melvin spent many years in the family restaurant business, managing House of Louie in Chinatown and Hi Hat in Tigard. Melvin was profoundly committed to everything he did and equated his success to being a trusted husband, father, brother, and friend. Melvin was active in the local community and served for several years as President for the So Yoon Association and Bing Kong Association as well as on the Board of the Hong Kong Club. In his retirement, Melvin became an avid golfer and was a well-known fixture at the King City and Red Tail golf courses.
Melvin is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; daughters, Kristena (Tim), Priscilla (John), Rebecca (Tad), Cynthia (Jeremie); Grandchildren Malia, Myles, Skylar, Henry, Carter, Kennedy, Audrey, and Isaiah; along with his three surviving siblings, Steven, Calvin (Jo), and Janet (Norm) and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held at 2pm, Friday, May 5, 2023, at The Stockpot Broiler, 8200 SW Scholls Ferry Road, Beaverton, Ore. 97008. Memorial gifts may be made in Melvin’s honor.
