I am very sorry for your loss. The few times i got to spend with him where memorable. From his birthdays, to Trouts Unlimited dinners, to hanging in your back yeard, and the stories he told. He will be missed.
Our condolences to all of the Benson family. Such a great conversationalist and a very knowledgeable man. He will be missed.

I first worked with Mel when we attended monthly Area Managers’ meetings in Edmonton.  Given my newness with Norman Wells, Mel’s willingness to share his knowledge of the operation and communities in the Sahtu  was very much appreciated.  Decades later, the federal government retained Mel as the chief negotiator of  Mackenzie Gas Project benefits and access agreements for the Dehcho.  His selection to lead the negotiaions brought thoughtfulness, balance and perspective to the negotiations.

Mel’s abscence will be sorely missed, My condolences to Mel’s family on his passing.

Mel was a wonderful man and will he greatly missed.  Our sincerest condolences to all of Mels family and friends.  He touched a lot of people. He was so kind, insightful and inspiring.  We will miss him and his stories.  It was always nice to chat with Mel.  Rest In Peace Mel.    Ann & Peter
What a great man. In the 90’s when I was in charge of the RCMP in Drayton Valley, Mel, heading up Imperial Oil was a huge supporter of our crime fighting initiatives. Always made sure we had the equipment to get the job done. So many good times. The stories of going to the inner city in Edmonton to help the indigenous youth, using his own time to go to Australia to assist Aboriginal people with land claims. And many more. A lot never saw that side of Mel. Never asking for any thanks, just glad to help someone. I will miss our lunches at the Century Downs casino.  Always enjoyed your visits to our annual ´fish fry’ in Strathmore. You will be greatly missed. Condolences to all.

I first met Mel in 1990 as my new boss the Area Manager of our Cynthia Field operations. Over the next 4 years Mel's leadership and mentorship changed the course of my career. After 31 years I still reference the learnings I picked up from Mel and still carry the list ' Mel's Rules for Success'.
Thanks for every thing you did to help me Mel and rest in peace my friend.

Our condolences to all Mel’s family.  I loved it when Mel would take time to show me his art collection and pass along his wisdom.  A true role model for all Canadians. We will miss you.   Rest In Peace my friend.
Our sincere condolences to the whole Benson family on the loss of Mel. We have many fond memories of our time with him in the Drayton Valley years. We had lots of fun with horses, quads and home hosted parties. Mel was always up for a good time and made it happen. So sorry for your loss, Penny and Ed Arneson.

You will be missed by many cuz

May you soar high as you begin your journey home

Simply the best. Smart, generous, fun loving and dedicated to his family. His memory will last for ever.Sincerest condolences to his family

I was so sorry to hear about Mel's passing. I extend my deepest sympathies. I first met Mel and the Benson family in 1980 in Cold Lake. He took me on as my mentor and friend as I began my career with Imperial and we both supported the earliest development of Cold Lake working with the community, governments, businesses and the company . We also had a 18 yr relationship with me supporting the EHS/Sustainability Committee during his Suncor Board tenure. Mel was always passionate and generous about sharing, inspiring and engaging with individuals (a very long list!) and organizations (a very long list of not for profit, cultural and business organizations) to help them achieve their potential. There was a deep reservoir of life experiences and insights that always amazed and inspired us. And he had fun and enjoyed life along the way!

He would say to me “get up real early and push very hard!”…he always followed his own advice and has earned the peace that comes with what he has accomplished but most importantly how he did it. Sincerely Gord Lambert
