Melanie's life was a continuous sequence of acts of kindness. She clearly held us all so fully in her heart, crafting her wonderfully creative and personalized cards that we received regularly accompanied by insightful, humorous, and often profound messages. How many of us were picked up by Melanie for a date, driven to our destination in the most circuitous route, learning Oakland history along the way and making a stop to give to someone in need or to make a wellness check on an unhoused individual Melanie had befriended? Melanie was no nonsense, full hearted, and acted with conviction noticing those on the margins and giving, always giving, in humble, unfussy, unquestioning ways. Melanie always showed up for our celebrations and acknowledged us with meaningful gifts, love, and warm laughter. She is our Auntie, our Sister, our Friend, our second Mom. I miss her dearly and am so grateful for the time we shared, the engaging conversations we had, and for the wisdom and glitter she leaves behind.

Oh I’m so sorry to hear this news. Melanie and I shared a cube at DOR and was a lot of fun. An interesting life-I loved her story of being a nun.

I am so shocked tohear this. I will miss her deeply. She's been in my life since I can remember. My sister, Veronica , and her were close friends until her death in 2005. I will miss her beliefs and talking politics and Oakland with her.  We both love Oakland. My condolences to her family especially Julie, who I used to play with when we were children

Dear Melanie, my very special friend! We shared so much w each other I loved her humor, sarcasm, irreverence and spunk!

EVERY HOLIDAY MEL SENT ME A JACKIE LARSON ECARD. TODAY I OPENED MY EMAIL AND THERE WAS A JACKIE LARSON THXGIVING DAY CARD - NOT FROM MEL BUT FROM EDITOR OF MY BOOK. NOW HOW DID SHE KNOW TO SEND THAT CARD? I FIGURE IT HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH MEL THOUGH THE SENDER DID NOT KNOW HER OR KNOW SHE HAS PASSED.

WHO KNOWS?

make beautiful whimsical cards -always with glitter and sparkles. Postcards From the Edge just one of her many trademarks. Always sent with love, received with great joy.

Birthdays were always magical with Melanie - whether she was helping us celebrate or we were celebrating with her ❤️
