Mavis's obituary

In the quiet reverence of a life lived with humility and a heart full of gratitude, we commemorate Mavis Nell (Kirkland) Jordan. On 6 March 2024, she returned to her Creator in Knoxville, Tennessee, after 93 years of faithful stewardship.

Nell was born on 17 September 1930, in Gulfport, Mississippi. At various points in her life, she lived in Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee.

Gone from our midst is a pillar of the church, a woman who served as an Elder with a spirit of servitude and humility. Her dedication to reading for the blind was an offering of love, a reflection of her belief that every soul deserved the gift of story, of knowledge, of connection. As a librarian, she nurtured the seeds of understanding, cultivating gardens of thought and reflection within the minds of those who sought sanctuary among the stacks.

Nell spent over four and a half decades without her beloved partner, Wallace Doty Jordan, whose early departure in 1978 left her with a strength only solitude can teach. Her love endures in the lives of her son, Dr. Greg Jordan, her daughters Karen Jordan, and Jennifer Jordan Cranston, and in the hearts of all who knew her.

A graveside service was held in Jackson, Mississippi to remember Nell’s long life, and to celebrate her genuine love of G-d. Nell is at peace, and is with the L-rd for eternity.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to causes close to Nell's heart, such as literacy programs, heart research funds, or mental health initiatives.

As Nell is called to eternal rest, we honor her life as a living prayer, a beacon of the sacred respect for all creation, and a vessel of the divine love that unites us all.
