In 2018, my dear friend, Maureen and I spent months developing a mental well-being program for WE Charity. We worked together in Toronto, Vancouver and Kelowna building strategy, having dinners with VIPs to secure key partnerships and sharing ideas about social emotional learning, belonging and how to care for others in schools. She cared for me too.. Maureen was the one I called during a middle of the night health crisis with my daughter. She reminded me that nothing was more important and helped me build up the courage to walk away from work and walk towards what matters most. I think of you everyday, Maureen. Hugs to your beautiful family and Neal.

Maureen was my dear friend, writing partner and mentor. She lit up every room she walked into. She loved deeply. Maureen also loved a great meal and exceptional glass of wine. We shared a lot of both. I hope to honour you Maureen by showing others the kindness you always showed me.
I miss Maureen more than words can say. She helped to change our system of early learning and care in BC. She was not only the child whisperer, she was also the school district whisperer. An early adopter of the StrongStart BC program, then later a champion of the seamless day child care model. I count myself very lucky to have been a part of Maureen’s work life. She was my sage advisor and wise colleague. Thank you to the Dockendorf family for sharing Maureen with the world. I’m deeply sorry for your loss.
Jambo, jambo bwana!Habari gan…

Jambo, jambo bwana!

Habari gani? Mzuri sana!

Wageni, mwakaribishwa

Kenya yetu, hakuna matata

Jambo Maureen! Our special song (above)  from Kenya will forever be in my heart along with you. My heartfelt gratitude to you for shining your light so brightly upon us all. ❤️

I just discovered Maureen's passing and am so deeply sorry for this loss. Maureen was my friend, my colleague and my mentor.  There was a good reason "everyone" in BC Education knew Maureen. She was brilliant, dedicated to children, educators, friends and of course the great loves of her life- her amazing husband, children and grandchildren. She will be deeply missed and leaves a great legacy in education.
I remember Maureen as a bright light—joyful, inclusive, and full of humour. Her passion for education and early learning awakened and inspired so many, always returning us to the heart of our work: the child. Her spirit lives on in every smile, every moment of wonder, and every child whose voice is heard. She is deeply missed.
My heart is deeply saddened with the loss of Maureen, indeed a sunbeam that shone on, and brightened the lives of so many. I consider myself so fortunate to have been a part of different networks in the education world spearheaded by Maureen. She truly recognized the gifts each person contributed, and infused her love and joy into every aspect of our work together. I am a better educator because of her. To her family, thank you for sharing Maureen with us - all across BC. Her impact is lasting, and her legacy lives on in so many of us. Much love , Laura

Maureen filled each day with a bit of magic and joy that she shared with everyone she met. In the 1990s we worked as School District Curriculum Consultants: Maureen in Burnaby, myself  in Saanich on Vancouver Island. Thankfully our paths crossed many times over decades! Maureen and I enjoyed catching up often and visiting many Victoria restaurants together! In the last three years we met on zoom. She was a dear friend and I will truly miss her kindness. Sending love and energy to her beloved family.

I will remember, and now miss, our pedagogical discussions. Our first was way back in 1991 when you were working on your MEd. I wish we could have continued these in the sunny Okanagan now that I’m in the neighbourhood. The world is less interesting without you.

Cheers to you my friend

John Goheen

Mrs. Dockendorf was my kindergarten teacher and also my sister’s.  I remember her beautiful long hair, warm smile and singing “The More We Get Together” with her guitar.  She became Mrs. Dockendorf the year I was in her class as I recall switching to this new name during the daily “Goodbye Song”. I still have my “Kinder Cooks” booklets with our snack recipes.  Mrs. Dockendorf  taught me that words matter. When I expressed displeasure about a food she said, “You don’t hate it, you dislike it.”  Another classic was, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”  Mrs. Dockendorf also had a silly side and taught me how to flare my nostrils repeatedly.  Learning about trees and salmon on our Camp Capilano trip was another highlight. Bless You Mrs. Dockendorf! There are thousands of us who became better humans because our lives were touched by your magical spirit!
Maureen was a ray of sunshine, with her bright personality, deep commitment to children, excellence in teaching/learning and for all those who knew her.   Her legacy/footprint will be felt for generations to come.
