MAUDE's obituary
“Maude Ester”, “Momma”, “Nanny Maude”, “Gramatha,” “Gurl”
A woman destined for greatness and a heart for giving, Maude Ester Adair descended upon us June 30, 1941 in Trinity, Texas to the late James and Clara Mae Adair, Sr.
She was taught hard work paid off at a very young age by her parents whom where staunch Christians at very young ages in their respective lives. Born in 1911, her mother, known to many as Missionary Adair never wore a pair of pants in her life, as this did not go with the values of being a Christian Woman and growing up in the Church of God In Christ.
Momma graduated from Trinity HS and attended Texas Southern University for two years before going on to work full time. My gurl worked at the Houston Police Department as a dispatcher for six years, Sears Roebuck as a Sales Associate for four and Houston Independent School District Special Education Department from August 1980 to March 2003 as a clerk where she met life long friends that she still talked to all times of the night and morning up until God called her home. During this time she would also work nights to provide for her family. Her passion and love for flowers was another means of income to provide for her family. Momma would take floral classes throughout the week and weekend to enhance her artistic talents of flower and mum making. Seems like she would make mums for all of Madison and surrounding schools once our friends found out she could make them and was a heck of a lot cheaper. She loved it, so it wasn’t work for her.
Her time at TSU is where she met her late husband of Bay City, Texas, Barney Allen, Jr. From this union she would bear four amazing children, Barney Allen, III., Sherman Renard Allen, Shandri Phelita Allen Pines Stovall and Bruce Davon Allen. After their divorce and daddy remarried, momma would gain some amazing step-children, Tonya Lynette Brown, Montra’ Enoch Roberson and Frederick Woodard. What was so amazing is that daddy’s new wife, Audrey Allen became one of mommas best friends, she would come to Houston and stay overnight as well us all the kids would go stay with her as well. What is even more amazing about mom, is that she became friends with daddy’s third wife, CeCe whom would remain friends till this day and talked frequently until she was called home.
WHEN GOD MADE MOMMA, HE MADE A SPECIAL WOMAN.
Gramatha grew up in the Church, attending, Southside COGIC in Trinity, Texas. Upon on her move to Houston, she attended the Evangelist Temple COGIC, Greater Emmanuel COGIC, Hornes Chapel COGIC, Victory Temple COGIC, Bethel Temple COGIC, Grace Temple COGIC and Brentwood Baptist Church. Her last two memberships were at her daughter and son-in-law’s, Divine Faith Fellowship Church and lastly she would return to her roots, Grace Temple COGIC under the direction of her only remaining sibling, Pastor James Adair, Jr.
Throughout all the medical conditions, (diabetes, CHF, glaucoma, lung disease, finger amputation, all toes amputated, neuropathy) and being in chronic pain, she still was active, loved to cook and bake. Some of her favorite dishes were a BIG ole pot of gumbo to feed the whole south side, chicken salad, macaroni salad, dressing with giblet gravy and homemade chicken and vegetable soup. Nanny Maude’s favorite dishes to bake were, homemade 7UP pound cake with fresh butter, banana split pie, apple pie and fruit cake. Her last things she would eat and have me cooking was Wolf Brand chili with mustard and cheese and biscuits and gravy with Owens sausage crushed up in it. I resisted making gravy at 1st because you had to sit there and watch it, but I’m so thankful that her last month I made it as she sat there, told me what to put in it, how much and watched me. I would make enough for her for about three days as sometimes that would be the only thing she wanted to eat. Her grand-daughters Domineca and Dyneshia know the secrets to her recipes as she would be on facetime walking them through the steps, so her legacy and food will live on for generations to come.
Momma loved her sports, which I think she inherited from her mother, whom was an avid Rockets fan and the fact that her kids loved them and were involved. My gurl was a homer now, Oilers, Rockets, Astros, Texans, TCU, UH Cougars and of course them Madison Marlins, where all her kids graduated from. When a game was on and she didn’t know who to root for, she would also ask, “Who are we going for?”
Talk about a giving woman. She never met a stranger that she didn’t invite to come live with us, cook for, buy things for and just simply love on. The neighborhood loved her dearly as though she was their own mother, which back then, she was, as whomever house you were at, was your mother. Maude Ester loved having company over, it gave her a reason to cook and made you feel welcomed and loved.
