Matthew's obituary
Matthew Edward Stemm, born in Grundy, VA on January 14th, 1960, passed from this earthly life into the arms of Jesus on July 15th,2025 at approximately 7:27 AM at his home in Caseyville, IL.
Matthew is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Cara Stemm of Caseyville, IL in addition to his father, Gerald Stemm & wife Lorraine of Chesapeake, VA. He leaves behind two sons, Jason Stemm & wife Trish of Herrin, IL, son Nathan Smith & wife Jen of Ofallon, IL and a daughter, Aimee Branch & husband Kenny of Swansea, IL. Grandchildren Khristion Stemm & wife Stephanie of Carbondale, IL, Jeremiah Stemm & friend Dylan Felty of Carbondale, IL, Ethan Stemm & Elias of Herrin, IL; Colton & Knox Smith of Ofallon, IL; Kenzie (Branch) Gelsinger of Carlyle, IL and Jacob Branch of Swansea, IL. Brother, Aaron Stemm of Chesapeake, VA and sister, Gerri Orange & husband Tommy of Suffolk, VA, beloved nieces and nephews, along with many friends and loved ones.
Matthew was preceded in death by his mother, Louisa Stemm of Chesapeake, VA, Mother-in-Law, Maxine Young of Fairfield, IL as well as Father-in-Law, Leonard Harper of Fairfield, IL.
Matthew attended Kentucky Christian College with a major in music as well as biblical studies. He was an accomplished musician that performed as well as taught multiple instruments in a variety of avenues. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially with his wife and grandchildren. Lovingly referred to as “Pa” or “Pop”, he dedicated his life to being around those he loved and spent his final days with his family by his side. He was a die-hard fan of the Dallas Cowboys and owned just about every piece of memorabilia possible. His sense of humor and unpolitical correctness brought joy and laughter to all that knew and loved him.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, July 24th, 2025, at August Gate Church – Address 1209 Royal Heights Rd. Belleville, IL 62226. The family will receive those who wish to express their condolences from 4-5 PM with a service to immediately follow from 5-6 PM. Any memorials, gifts or donations to help cover expenses will be graciously received by the Stemm family.
