Thinking of you a lot this year... there was another eclipse and a bunch of coworkers are in Japan for weeks for work. You would have loved both. Always in our hearts <3

It's tough to find a single story about Lock. He was a constant presence in my life from the day we met during our Freshman year at CU. Over the past 9 years I had the privilege of growing up alongside him, and it was a pleasure to watch him mature from a kid who would sleep through a physics exam into an outstanding optical engineer ready to pursue his graduate studies. One of my innumerable fond memories of Lock occurred during the summer of 2017. We were roommates living at “Koala,” a house that the 6 of us kept excruciatingly clean and in constant good repair (lol could you imagine). As the summer came to a close and our Senior year of college loomed, 8 of us decided to make the trek to the Grand Tetons to witness the total solar eclipse. Though we had only 2 minutes of eclipse totality, Lock, ever the space nerd, watched the slow march of the Moon across the face of the Sun for the better part of an hour (pictured). Much like the image of the Sun inevitably burned into the back of Lock’s eyelids, I can still see him, mouth gaping, staring up at proof of forces too expansive and mysteries to comprehend - kindling to the flame of his curiosity.

This sad news is heartbreaking and I’m sending love and prayers to the whole family. I’ll always remember Matthew as that adorable toddler who we met when we moved to the neighborhood and then watching him grow as he attended Donald. He was a light and had such an endearing smile. I know he’ll be missed by so many people who’s lives he touched.

Matt was always one of my favorite students at Donald Elementary! He was a precious, sweet, kind, hot mess, and he made me laugh all the time. He was a bright light, and I'm so happy he got to explore the world and make all the connections he did. My heart is broken for you all, he will be missed terribly.

Matt studied Astronomy and Astrophysics at CU Boulder. Matt and I would talk about how the James Webb Space Telescope would make Astrophysics so much more amazing. We spoke about him going to graduate school. Matt was working in an optics company in Boulder, enjoying it, and thinking about studying optics in graduate school, and I was so excited for him.
Ad Astra Matt !
