Matt's obituary
Matthew Francis Harshman, 62, of Seattle, WA, passed away on August 31st 2022 due to a heart condition.
Matt was born on November 23rd,1959 to Eugene Lee Harshman and Mary-Louise Bradley in Bakersfield, CA.
Growing up in Seattle's University District, Matt, the eldest of three brothers, attended University Heights Elementary, Eckstein MS, Lincoln HS for a year and then graduated from Nathan Hale HS. Thanks to his Mom's encouragement Matt found a huge interest in sports and music. He loved being involved and excelling at School Band, Aikido, Cascade Drum and Bugle Corps, and HS Football. His brothers followed him into all of these activities and enjoyed the leadership of a smart, artistic and athletic oldest sibling. Continuing his enthusiasm for music and playing his trumpet, Matt enrolled at Central Washington University to study Music Education. His brothers did the same the next two years. Matt graduated from CWU with a BA in Music Education however he spent much of his time in the Art Department's "dark-room" facilities where he honed his skills and nourished his passion for photography.
Following graduation, Matt taught Elementary Band for a year in the Kent School District, and then entered the Master's program at the University of Oregon to study Ancient History, and Ancient Art History. After receiving his Master's Degree Matt began his "Artist's Quest" and traveled to Europe and the Mediterranean to photograph Ancient Greek and Roman ruins. He used these photographs to create his book: Diary of an Ancient World (An Adaptation of the Histories by Herodotus). Early in his journey, Matt met his "wife to be" Leslie Holdcroft in Belfast Ireland, where they kindled a friendship that reunited them in many diverse parts of the world, eventually marrying in Seattle on September 28th 2002. Together they raised a bright and soulful son Samuel alo Angelo Holman.
Matt's return to Seattle meant getting to work on his book, and after some frustration with the newly developed "Photoshop" app and a visit to Adobe, Matt was hired there to help with testing and support. Matt's expertise in photography and his keen understanding of their vision for the product resulted in 16 years of service at Adobe Systems. After his time at Adobe, Matt was hired by Silicon Publishing, Inc. where he continued to support and test software.
Matt enjoyed music and basketball on a daily basis. He was often found "shooting hoops" with youngsters at the local court or at home with an instrument in his hands. Most importantly Matt was a very loving friend to many and always brought humor and a festive spirit wherever he went. He is dearly loved and leaves us wishing we had more time with him. We miss you Matt!
Matt is survived by his uncle Hewitt Bradley; brothers Paul and Chris Harshman; his son Samuel alo Angelo Holman; Sam's mother, Leslie Holdcroft; niece, Bridget Harshman and nephews, Jack, Gabe, and Keegan Harshman.
