Our beloved Matthew has completed his work here and joined the heavenly dance. God knew him before he was knit in the womb, and while he was born with Down Syndrome, anyone who knew him knows he lived a life that was relentlessly "Up."

He was a man of quiet wisdom and legendary one-liners. Ask him if he’s doing alright? "I’m sure." Tell him he looks handsome in a suit? "You’re welcome."

Matthew was the keeper of the schedule and the master of the routine. The Commanders were on at 4:00, the bath was at 7:30, and the Friday meal blessing was his exclusive jurisdiction. He was our family ringer at Wii Golf, a spiral-throwing quarterback, and a hymnal enthusiast who knew every tune from the 1800s (even if the lyrics were… open to interpretation).

But mostly, he was just there. His hugs felt like they had an eternity to give—we were always the ones who had to let go first.

He is now perfectly made new, finishing the whole plate at the banquet table, and singing his songs to the One who always listened.
