Matthew's obituary
Matthew Davidson Coit, 42 years old, passed away unexpectantly on March 29, 2025 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA.
He was surrounded by his loving mother, her partner, Richard Pynigar, and the hospital Chaplain.
Born in Norfolk, VA on August 27,1982 to the late John Hamilton Coit and his cherished mother, Margaret Lucille Brown, who currently resides in Tampa, FL.
His father was a newspaper reporter for the Rocky Mountain News in Colorado before his death in 1986.
He was preceded by his maternal grandparents, Walter Dean Brown, who was a dean at Southeastern Community College in NC after retiring from the U.S. Air Force, and his beloved grandmother, Martha Lee Davidson Brown. He was also predeceased by his paternal grandparents who lived in Alexandria, VA; Hamilton Coit, retired from the U.S. Army and his grandmother Alice Marion Flynn Coit.
He is survived by his Great Aunt Evelyn Daniel and her family in Mocksville, NC, as well as several uncles, Matthew was very close to his uncle Alan Brown of VA.
Matthew established lasting friendships when he attended St. Anthony's Catholic School in San Antonio, FL and Jr. High in Pasco County, FL.
Formerly of Tampa, FL , he later lived in Malibu, CA for several years, riding his Harley, surfing, and enjoying the West Coast. He and his treasured dog, Dr. Zhivago, later relocated to a rural area in north GA.
He was a very gifted photographer and artist, who loved traveling, music, and movies. If he liked a movie or a song, he would memorize every word and nuance. He had a boisterous and whimsical sense of humor, the ability to create fantastic stories, and loved to have a good time with his friends, who became his friends for life. He always wanted the best for those he loved, offering encouragement, strength, and unconditional love,
At his service, Deacon William Schubring of St. Catherine Laboure in Commerce, GA, joined him in prayer with his mother, Lucille, her partner Richard, one of his best friends, Steven Wright, his wife, Ashley with their son Stirling, and his Aunt Stephanie Culleton.
Matthew had an infectious laugh, a sense of humor like none other, and a sincere loyalty that will be greatly missed and forever remembered with love. Like his favorite song by Wheezer, “Say It Ain’t So,” – it is difficult to come to terms with this loss. A Celebration of Life will be planned for his birthday in the Tampa Bay area.
