Matthew's obituary
Matthew Archibald Bloom (March 4, 1944 -July 17, 2024) has left behind his loving family including his wife Mary (Campo) Bloom of 58 years; his two daughters Jesse (Gary) Platt and Casey (Alfred) Albrizio; his three grandchildren Matthew Cole Platt, Raelle Platt, and Jackson Albrizio; and his two siblings Andy Bloom and Nancy Kruse.
Matthew was born in Brooklyn, but spent most of his life in Mount Sinai after moving east with is family at 9 years old. He spent his childhood playing and misbehaving with his brother, his sister, and his friends. The stories of the fun he had and the trouble he got into were better than any fairytale his kids could hear and they asked him to repeat them over and over again. From pictures and anecdotes it seems that he and Andy were outside together with a ball in their hand from dusk 'till dawn, putting it down only occasionally to torture their little sister Nancy whom they both adored. During college he met Mary, the love of his life, and went on to marry her and raise their daughters up the hill from the house he grew up in.
Matt was passionate about life. He never missed a day of exercise or an opportunity to play sports. He loved music and filled his home with it-whether it was Marvin Gaye or Bobby Bare he was always excited to introduce his family to a song he loved. He was an avid reader whose interest and knowledge was vast. He loved to impart that knowledge almost as much as he loved to tell a joke.
As an English teacher in the Comsewogue School District, he inspired and entertained colleagues and students alike for 32 years. Although he was retired for over 20 years it wasn't unusual for him to run into an old student who remembered him fondly, and few things made him prouder.
Matt cherished his friends and was as loyal as he was entertaining. Many of his friendships were lifelong and the bedrock of his identity. As much as he loved his old friends, he relished any opportunity to make new ones-always striking up a conversation anywhere he was.
But nothing matched his love for his beautiful wife, his children, and his grandchildren. The bond Cole and Raelle had with their "Pa" was truly extraordinary and there was no place he'd rather be than by their side. Matt’s life was built around his family, and they will never be the same without him.
