Matthew's obituary

MATTHEW ALAN SMITH, age 64, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away on January 14, 2026.

Matthew was born on August 9, 1961, in Iola, Kansas, to Genevieve Mayfield Smith and David Gerard Smith. He is also survived by Kem Smith (Rita).

Matthew graduated from Shawnee Heights High School in Topeka, Kansas. He continued his education at Washburn University, then the University of Kansas, where he earned his PhD in Psychology in 1988.

He began his professional career at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, working on the pediatric unit, before moving on to work in prestigious private practices. Matthew devoted his life’s work to walking alongside adolescents facing psychological and substance abuse challenges. His compassion, dedication, and deep care for young people defined his career and calling.

Matthew married in 1983 and is survived by his wife, Tamala Pukach Smith. He is also survived by his sons, Joshua Matthew Smith (38) and Adam Gerard Smith (35).

Matt was deeply devoted to his family, his church, and his faith. He had a profound love for children and adolescents and found true purpose in his work. He also cherished the fellowship of his men’s group, the Brothers of the Shield, who meant a great deal to him.

A Memorial Service will be held at Central Christian Church, located at 100 New Beginnings Way, Henderson, Nevada, on February 7 at 11:00 a.m.

An additional Celebration of Life in Topeka, Kansas, will be announced at a later date.
