Matt's obituary
Conard Blount Mattox IV (Matt), 42, passed away peacefully on December 10 from complications due to a glioblastoma. He was surrounded by family. He was always friendly, compassionate and made the most of the life he was given. Matt was born to the late Conard Blount Mattox III (Matt) and Dorothy Long Mattox in Richmond on January 14, 1980. He attended St. Christopher’s School for 13 years where he was a standout writer and track runner. Matt followed his family’s tradition and attended The University of Richmond where he ran track, served on the Honor Council and majored in English and Art History. It was there he met Constance (Connie), and they later married. After college, Matt was awarded a Master’s of Mass Communications at VCU’s Brandcenter where he developed a deep love for the industry in which he spent his entire career.
Following his graduation, Matt moved to Portland, Oregon and began his career in advertising as a strategic planner. An accomplished cyclist, Matt immersed himself into Portland’s road cycling culture and explored the region on his bike. In 2007, Matt returned to Richmond and joined The Martin Agency where he worked until his death. He had several roles at Martin, and he was most proud of his work leading the Agency’s GEICO account. Matt’s career brought him much happiness; he was known for starting and ending his days energized and smiling.
Matt and Connie wed in 2007 and had three sons: Conard Blount V (Matt), Henry Hudgins and Frank Watkinson. Matt adored being their father and especially loved riding bikes with the boys to school every morning. He was a loving and enthusiastic role model.
Matt served at an adjunct professor at The Brandcenter and The Academy of Arts University in San Francisco. He mentored dozens of University of Richmond and Brandcenter students, even while battling his brain tumor.
Matt was diagnosed with a glioblastoma in June 2021 and faced his diagnosis with his characteristic optimism and determination. He endured multiple surgeries, a clinical trial, overseas immunotherapy treatment, chemotherapy and radiation with bravery. Matt believed in the research and was hopeful a cure would be available for this disease in the near future.
Matt was preceded in death by his father; sister, Anne; grandparents, Virginia and Ralph Long and Conard Jr. and Mary Anne Mattox. He is survived by his wife and children; mother; Uncle Bill Mattox (Sara); in-laws, Sally and Frank Donnelly; sister-in-law, Cortney Kosmack (Jason); nephews Jack and Beau, goddaughters, Georgiana, Vivienne and Juliette; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Reveille United Methodist Church (4200 Cary Street Road) with a reception following . The interment will be private.
