Matred Polk Murdaugh O’Quinn Roberts, age 96, of Islandton, SC passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023.

Matred was born on May 17, 1926 to John Berry Polk and Lillie Dubois Polk in Colleton County. Matred started her job at Country Miss where she was a turner and retired after many years. She met her first spouse, Osgood Darby Murdaugh Sr, and went on to have 3 children, Betty Jane, Jackie, and Osgood Jr (O.D.)

Matred enjoyed spending her time in the garden, where you could always find her plowing, planting, picking, and trying her best to keep the deer out. This was to ensure that she always had enough food to cook for everyone. If you didn’t go back for a second helping, then you weren’t eating enough! In Matred’s eyes, you were either too fat or too skinny, there was no in between, and she would be the first to let you know. She had her hair done routinely on Fridays, so she could look her best on Sundays, as she was a faithful member of Adnah Church, where she always sat in the choir. Many words could be used to describe Matred, but the most fitting is TOUGH. You will never meet another woman tougher than Matred, they don’t make them like her anymore. She was self sufficient and driven, as you could tell by her relentless time in the garden to provide for her and her family the way that she knew how. She was the most wonderful Momma, Grandma, Great Grandma, and Mama.

Matred was predeceased by her son O.D. Murdaugh “Bubba”, son-in-laws Wayne Causey and Wendell Smoak, husbands Osgood Darby Murdaugh Sr, Mendell O’Quinn, and William Roberts, sisters Jessie Lee Breland and Dorothy Byrd, and brother Marshall Polk. She is survived by her, daughters Jackie Smoak and Betty Jane Causey, daughter-in-law Kathy Murdaugh, sister Alma Breland, grandchildren Robbie Causey (Ashley), Scottie Causey (Deb), Jody Smoak (Michelle), BJ Smoak, Kevin Murdaugh, and Derek Murdaugh (Cathy), great grandchildren Joseph, Mollie, Katie, Hannah, Rob, Darby, and Carrie Causey and Fripp Smoak, as well as several nieces and nephews including loving niece and husband Shirley and Harry Driggers.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to: Adnah United Methodist Church, Cemetery Fund, 500 Adnah Church Road, Islandton, South Carolina 29929. Funeral services will be held at 11 am, Saturday morning, March 25, 2023 at Adnah United Methodist Church, Islandton. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the ceremony beginning at 10 am in the church sanctuary.
