It’s taken a while to work up the courage to get to this page and make a post but Happy birthday Matttty.
Mat was the combination of brains, charm, and love. Reading through all these posts it’s undeniable that he truly cared for his relationships whether it be family, friends, or friends turned family.
I lived with Mat for years in university. We used to call ourselves “the downstairsmen” because we always ended up in the basement of whatever house we moved to. I was very happy to share a wall with Mat for 3 years. He was always down to have a good time and hang out with the boys which after 4 years of university, the times we spent just chilling were the ones that we all keep coming back to as our favorite memories. We went through countless “growing up” experiences and learned so many life lessons together. Whether it was us getting in an incredible amount of trouble and ending up on the news, or coming back home excited because we just crushed that exam, so many of my formative memories I’m proud to say I’ve shared with Mat.
It’s unfair that you’re not here to take it with me, but I’ll be having a prairie fire shot in your honor tonight bud. Miss you tons.

I lived with Mat at school for 3 years. He was an excellent friend to me and so many others at Western. I am having trouble putting into words the positive effect he had on me in so many areas of life. I like the comment in the summary about how Mat was the master of work-life balance. He was the same in school. It was so clear to me that his relationships with those important to him were the number one priority. Watching him operate like this has inspired me to try to do the same with my own life. When I think back to my best memories, Mat was there for most of them (intramural hockey, our overly competitive euchre games against Alex & Nathan, going to Ceeps, getting through exams together, or just hanging out). He always brought a great vibe to whatever group he was in. I’ll never forget you Mat.
Kim - I hope you and your family find peace knowing Mat’s legacy will live on.

Mat was an amazing person to be around, he was such a funny guy and always had a smile on his face. After living together for 3 years, there are so many great times we shared. From our endless Euchre games to our championship intramural hockey team, Mat was always up for a good time and had some of the best hands on either the ice or ball hockey team. Mat also cooked some great burgers, on family dinner night, you could count on Mat to whip up some of the best homemade burgers you've ever had. Also an incredible artist, if you gave Mat an iPad he could paint some of the best landscape paintings you've ever seen. More than anything else, Mat was a terrific friend and I'll always remember our time as roommates. RIP Mat

2015, The World's Most Reliable Buick
Judging by the looks on our faces, this must have been deep into our first road trip. Our bodies running on nothing but pop tarts and hot dogs for days at this point. Mat loved it. I lobbied for real food on the next trip.

2015, The World's Most Reliable Buick
On our first road trip to the States in 2015. We went down Highway 1 on the Oregon Coast down into Northern California, and back up, culminating in a stop at the Jobin family cabin in BC. We had no idea what to expect on this trip, and through ups and downs, it became one of the pillars our lifelong friendship.

Mat and I at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. This was my favorite place we visited on our annual road trips.

The fellas at Alcatraz Island. This was during our third consecutive, and final road trip to the States. It was also the only one in which we stayed in a hotel, albeit just a few days in San Francisco. We had to be in line around 6 AM for the ferry to the Island if I recall correctly, because naturally all we could afford were the early-bird tickets.

I had to pleasure of having Matt as my team mate. He was an active great guy and will be missed by so many people. Just learned of his passing today and wish I could have been there at the service. My condolences to his family and friends. He will leave a big hole in our lives. I feel blessed to have known him.

Backcountry camping with our fearless leader. If I recall correctly, shortly after this pic was taken we spotted a grizzly. Jobin serenaded us with calls of “Heeeeey bear” on repeat until the grizzly moved on.
