Matheno's obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce Matheno "Mat" Elihu Bey, a beloved father, brother, and friend, passed away on June 11, 2024. Mat and his late twin brother Simon Joseph Bey were born during the midnight hour of Saturday, May 17, 1986, to Christine Bey and James Avery Carr Bey in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Matheno’s parents raised Matt as a Moorish American and took his name from the writings in the Moorish Koran which state that Matheno was the teacher of John the Baptist and Elihu was the teacher of his mother Elizabeth and of Jesus’ mother Mary.
Matt spent most of his life in Philadelphia. In 2005, he graduated from South Philadelphia High School and worked various jobs throughout the service industry until he eventually found his passion for cooking. He loved to be in the kitchen and dreamt of going to culinary school and becoming a chef.
To know Mat is to know he that he could be bull-headed and stubborn as his Taurus astrological sign. You never knew which Matt you were going to get. He could smother you with love and affection, making your day or--the whole interaction could go left, and it would be an unbelievably difficult day for you. He had a mean George Jefferson stroll, and his “fiery disposition” was legendary. Mat was flipping tables long before the Housewives made it famous, but afterwards he would always return, head down, deeply remorseful and determined to do better next time.
In 2015, Mat welcomed the love of his life, his proudest accomplishment and his spitting image, his daughter Aleina Goins Bey with Rhonda Goins. Although he was not their father, he also considered Rhonda’s two other girls Aniya and Analia as his daughters as well.
Matheno is survived by his daughter, Aleina, and her sisters Aniya and Analia; his Mother Christine; his father James; his siblings Robin, Moorel, Jamal, and Asia; his best friends Kyree and Jay as well as host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
As Mat continues his journey on the other side he rejoins his other half, his late twin Simon who exited this world shortly after his birth; his older brothers Derrick (Khaleem), Devon (Daquan); his grandmothers Josephine and Geraldine; his grandfather’s George and James, along with many others who are guiding his transition.
At only 38, he left us too soon but as his namesake states in the Koran, "It is not well to weep because of death. Death is no enemy of man; it is a friend who, when the work of life is done, just cuts the cord that binds the human boat to earth, that it may sail on smoother seas.”
