MaryLee Carter (Bradley), 88: Champion of International Education and Devoted Friend
Tempe, AZ - MaryLee Carter (Bradley), a passionate educator and champion for international understanding, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2024, at the age of 88.
Born on November 8, 1935, in Denison, Iowa, MaryLee grew up in Tucson and embraced the spirit of Arizona, living throughout the state in Phoenix, Flagstaff, and Globe. She began her career as an elementary school teacher. Later, she focused on adult learners, ultimately finding her calling in supporting international students.
A proud University of Arizona graduate, MaryLee held both a Bachelor's degree and a Master's in Higher Education. Her dedication to international education was a driving force. She proudly held long-term positions focused on international students at Arizona State University, followed by Thunderbird Graduate School of International Management before retiring in 2003.
During her tenured career, she established the Arizona International Educators, an organization dedicated to fostering best practices in international education across Arizona. Her commitment extended to NAFSA: Association of International Educators, where she held several leadership positions and was continually recognized for her decades-long service.
MaryLee wasn't just passionate about education; she possessed a big heart for animals, cherishing her many beloved canine and feline companions over the years. She also treasured her monthly "Breakfast Buddies" gatherings with a beloved group of former Thunderbird employees who remained close friends, sharing laughter and memories.
MaryLee leaves behind a legacy of love and inspiration. She is survived by her loving daughters, Leigh McKenney (Patrick McKenney, d.) and Carol Gillen (Larry Gillen), and her cherished granddaughter, Madison Fye.
A celebration of life will be planned for the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any animal rescue of your choice.
