Maryann's obituary
The daughter of Jack and Anne, Maryann was born November 6, 1923 in Spokane, Washington. She was the oldest of three children, big sister to Jack and Selene who have since passed.
By any definition she was an extraordinary woman who led a full life. When she was a teenager, she invested in an airplane and learned how to do aerial stunts. During World War II, she pitched in as a “Rosie the Riveter” and operated an engine lathe and planer in the manufacture of aircraft parts.
Then, she took her love of aviation and flew for the Civil Air Patrol in Spokane. Later, she joined the Navy where she served as an Air Control Tower Operator in Oakland, CA.
Maryann moved to Los Angeles, CA to study Journalism at USC. She met and married the love of her life, Leo Fenster. Together, they had three boys: Alan (Linda), Stephen (Mary Lee) and Michael (Sarah). She was happiest when she was spending time with her large extended family, which includes five grandchildren (Dylan, Genevieve, Jade, Matthew and Sarah), three great grandchildren (Kemper, Oliver and Zoe), many nieces, nephews and their children as well. Visiting with them and sharing stories with them filled her life.
Maryann has always been deeply involved in her faith. She was the President of the entire West Coast Chapter of what is now called the Pacific District of Women of Reform Judaism (the chapter includes Hawaii and Vancouver). She also served on the
board of the international organization of WRJ.
Maryann will be deeply missed by family and friends alike. We are thankful to have had her in our lives.
In lieu of flowers Maryann would prefer donations to FACING HISTORY AND OURSELVES or a charity of your choice.
