Mary Ruthe's obituary
Mary Ruthe was born in Houston, Texas on April 9, 1958 and went to her final resting place on March 15, 2024. She is preceded in death by her father Charles Hunt. She is survived by her mother Virginia Hlanak Hunt; her husband Harold “Hal” Miller; her brother Walter and his wife Julie; her son Chris, wife Sammie and children Virginia, Nolan, and Lainey; her daughter Kim and partner JJ; her step-daughter Jessica and children Sam, Emunah, Avi, and Esti; her step-son Daniel, wife Sarah and children Maxwell and Ruby; and her step-daughter Andrea, husband Donovan and children Wesley and Wyatt.
Mary Ruthe was raised in Houston and spent summers growing up with her family at their beach house at Sea Isle in Galveston, Texas where her love for the sun and sand first began. She continued the tradition of summers at the beach with her own children and helped create lasting memories at the house her father and grandfather built with their own hands.
Mary Ruthe graduated from Southwest Texas (Texas State University) and was recruited from the campus by Exxon, where she had a wonderful 36 year career. For several of those years, she went back to her Alma Mater to recruit for Exxon and is responsible for many of the young professionals who still work there today. She was the definition of a consummate professional and made a lasting impact on all those she worked with. It was at Exxon where she met some of her very best friends and joined the Ladies Night Out (LNO) group. The group is still connected today even though differing career paths, work locations, and personal lives have taken them in many directions. They still share birthdays, graduations, marriages, weekend trips, and every major life event. Most of all, they are always there for each other. Mary Ruthe wrote in their 20th anniversary LNO album, “I get emotional support from each member in a very trusting environment. It is a true comfort just knowing the ladies are there when I need them.”
On January 1, 2006, Mary Ruthe married Hal Miller in a beautiful ceremony on the beach in Galveston. Together they continued to spend weekends at the beach and ultimately retired there at their house, “Miller’s Landing”. Hal and Mary Ruthe loved to travel together and visited many places such as New Zealand, Galapagos Islands, and driving trips along the US coasts. Their favorite trips were those within central Costa Rica.
In her spare time, Mary Ruthe loved gardening and creating beautiful crafts. She was a certified master gardener and was always eager to learn new skills. She was willing to help others tend to their gardens or give advice on “sickly” plants. She was always looking to help out in her communities, where she served in organizations such as the Sea Isle “Planter’s Bunch” and Brazoria County Master Gardeners. She created one of a kind birthday cards, designed shirts for her grandkids, and made other homemade crafts in her fully stocked craft room. This became her happy place once she and Hal moved away from the beach. Everything she made was lovingly imprinted with her signature “MRM Creations” logo.
Mary Ruthe was devoted to her work, her craft, her friends, her family, and her sweet dogs Lacey and Molly. But her greatest life’s work was that of being a mother and “Honey” to all of her grandkids. Selfless beyond compare, she did whatever was needed to nurture, support, love and keep her family close. From beach trips to holiday celebrations, she always found special ways to shower her precious grand babies with love.
Mary Ruthe was taken from us too soon after a hard fought and unexpected battle with lung disease. She was strong until the very end and went peacefully with Hal, Chris and Kim at her side. She will be dearly missed by all those who loved her.
Details for a Celebration of Life will follow in the coming days. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
