Mary's obituary
Mary Vandeventer Miner
(August 31, 1948 - December 6, 2023)
Born in Tulsa, OK to Ray Bloss Vandeventer and Wilma Vandeventer, Mary died unexpectedly from intestinal ischemia on the morning of December 6, 2023 in Dallas, TX. She spent her early years in Tulsa before moving south to Corpus Christi, where she attended Cullen Junior High and Carroll High School, subsequently becoming part of the first graduating class of King High School. Her education would continue at Del Mar College and the University of Texas. She married Robert Camp Miner Jr., with whom she had three children: Robert, Christopher, and Laura. The love she bore for her children, she easily and naturally extended to her two daughter-in-laws, Margaret and Meredith, and to her son-in-law Brad. She is survived by her children and their spouses, thirteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, four nieces, one nephew, and one brother.
During the first part of her adult life, Mary devoted herself to her children, giving them unyielding encouragement and support. She was known for both her warmth and her conversational wit. To her oldest son Robby, she would quip that she had secretly written all his papers and books. She would make similar jokes about screenplays written by her niece Casey, as well as exams taken in nursing school by her granddaughter Maria, who was a frequent and beloved visitor to her Dallas home over the last year.
In 2006, Mary moved from Corpus Christi to Ft. Worth, where she helped her son Chris start his first business. She loved to travel with friends and family, exploring cities on both coasts and in between. She was known to make the occasional excursion to Las Vegas, often joined by her children and her niece Casey. After moving from Ft. Worth to Dallas, where she lived a few blocks from her daughter Laura, she became a dedicated and proficient quilter. In 2019 she and Laura started a small quilting business. Some time before that, she discovered Skyline Chili in two states with both of her sons, creating a family tradition that endures into the present.
Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit will continue to inspire us.
