Mary's obituary

Our beloved Mary Evelyn Bazile McNeil, aged 95, departed this world for heaven on Monday January 18, 2021 after a valiant battle with COVID-19. Ms. McNeil’s devotion to her family and close circle of friends together with her profound belief in God gave her comfort and peace as she returned to her heavenly home.

Mary Evelyn Bazile was born in Goudeau, Louisiana in 1925 to parents Oins Bazile and Lucinda Wycoff Bazile. She was the youngest of 4 children surrounded by her loving brothers Dezria Bazile Sr., Lawrence Bazile and Austin Bazile. In her childhood years, she was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Goudeau and in her mid-life years, she was a long-standing member of Marlboro Heights Missionary Baptist Church in Killeen, Texas. For the past 30 years, Mary was a faithful member of McGee Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, holding the designation of its oldest member.

Mary completed her formal education in Louisiana during a time (the 40’s) when it was not common for children of black parents to finish school. Although money was not in abundance, her parents were determined to provide her with the best possible educational opportunities and she did not disappoint them. She held onto the belief that education was a much-needed pillar in life and she instilled that belief in her children and grandchildren as well as anyone else that would listen.

After moving to Texas in the early 50’s, Mary married (the late) Ira McNeil, Sr. and started her family life. Mr. McNeil joined the U.S. Army and together they traveled the world in service to our country. Mary’s career including working in several civil service positions supporting army troops for over 20 years and she retired from civil service work in 1988. Upon her retirement, she dedicated most of her time to volunteer work at McGee Chapel MBC, in support of its Day Star senior citizens, which was her love. In addition to serving as the Day Star president, she also served in roles of secretary and treasurer.

Mary is survived by sons Ira L. McNeil (Faye) of Houston, Texas, Patrick L. McNeil of Dallas, Texas and Gerald L. McNeil (Paula) of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by granddaughters Stacey McNeil, Kimberly McNeil Wigfall (James), Nicole McNeil and Ashley McNeil (Cecil) in addition to grandsons Jamaal D. McNeil (Valerie) and Patrick C. McNeil. She is preceded in death by sons Melvin Bazile and Daniel O. McNeil.
