She was the youngest daughter of Kaismiras and Marcella Zvirblis Civilikas. Although she was of Polish heritage, Mary was born in Lithuania on February 3, 1895, and came to Scranton, Pa. from Aponiskes Kaisiadoriu rajono at age 16. She was employed at the Scranton Silk Mill until she relocated to Sugar Notch with her sister Ursula. On January 20, 1918, she married Benjaminas Leikauskas (Beni Lakawskas) at the Holy Family Church, Sugar Notch, Pa.
She was a founder of Sts. Peter and Paul Lithuanian Roman Catholic Church, Sugar Notch, and a former member of the Christian Mother's Society. The highlight of her life was the church pilgrimage to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre near Quebec City, Canada.
Mary's hospitality always made everyone feel welcome. She opened her heart and home to family and friends throughout her life. It was inevitable if you were in her company that you would enjoy a cup of coffee and a piece of her homemade apple pie over warm conversation. Mary was everyone's rock and both relatives and friends turned to her often as they faced all challenges in their lives. She was an avid cook and baker, made artesian crafted woven rag rugs, and enjoyed Bingo and Polkas.
Mary will always be remembered for her garden which had countless varieties of vegetables and flowers including Lithuanian Rue. She was fluent in the Lithuanian and Polish languages and loved to tell the famous fairy tales beloved from the old countries to her beautiful grandchildren.
After her children were raised, Mary was employed by the Boston Candy Kitchen, Wilkes-Barre. At the time of her passing, she was preceded in death by her husband Beni on Dec. 21, 1959; son Bernard in 1979; and sister Ursula Zitkus, Philadelphia.
