Mary's obituary

Mary Leslie (Crounse) Ashmun passed away peacefully on December 1, 2019 surrounded by her sons Bruce and Mark. Born in Albany, NY on October 7, 1937, to Mary “Eleanor” (Voorhees) Crounse and Frederic “Marshall” Crounse, Mary was raised by Eleanor in Slingerlands, NY. She attended the Albany Academy for Girls graduating in 1956 and Hollins College in Virginia graduating after only 3 years in 1959. After college, Mary attended Katherine Gibbs School, a top secretarial school in the country. Upon graduation, she quickly got a job at Mobile Oil Sales in Boston, MA. It was during this time that she met Crawford “Cort” Ashmun, whom she would marry on November 7, 1964. After settling in Northborough, MA, she had her two sons, Bruce and Mark.

Mary was always know as incredibly smart, caring, beautiful and kind. An active member of the community, she belonged to the Junior League of Boston, served as President of Northborough Garden Club and was Den Mother to both boys’ Cub Scout troops. She was always on the go.

Summers were spent on Lake Winnepesaukee in New Hampshire, where she enjoyed swimming, boating and water skiing with her two boys and three step-sons, Jeffery, Craig and Scott. After renting for many years, she and Cort bought land in Hemlock Cove where they built two houses in 1982. While preparing for Cort’s retirement, they built and she ran a successful self storage business called “Your Extra Room” in Wolfeboro, NH. They moved permanently to the Lake in 1989. Again, Mary became active in the community where she lived until 2012, when she moved to California to live closer to her sons.

Mary is survived by her sons, Bruce and Mark; her grandchildren, Mary “Olivia”, Anna, and Hunter; her two stepsons, Jeffery and Craig; and Jeffrey’s sons, Connor and Dylan.

There will be a small service at the Chart House, 231 Yacht Club Way, Redondo Beach, CA on December 22nd at 2pm. Please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association (https://www.alz.org/) in her honor.
