I first met Marvie at a women's slumber party. She was my first example of a hard-of-hearing person speaking with correct sounds and intonation. Later, I reflected on how confident Marvie was, down to earth, and full of expectations; seemingly as though there was no handicap at all.

We knew Marvie for more than 40 years! We met her for the first time at Graduate School at CSUN back in 1975! Marvie completely became best friends with Jo Ann Hochman, Denise Denn, Terri and me because we all wanted to be teachers of the deaf. We took many of our graduate classes together and enjoyed lots of fun times! We called ourselves the “deef and bling” group due to the typos we all made when writing our term papers! Marvie was a beautiful, smart, kind, athletic, and poised lady! She loved her teaching profession! She was very dedicated to teaching deaf students and teaching ASL to adults, too!
Marvie was very good at playing paddle tennis and was very competitive. She borrowed Terri’s paddle tennis racket for a while and never returned it to us because she was hooked to this sport! We really miss her for her great competition and friendship!
Marvie was compassionate for others and joined us in several trips to Compton to renovate houses through the Compton Initiative.
We kept in contact with her through the years! Laughing at each others stories of being locked out and dealing with the many funny experiences of deaf and hearing spouses navigating daily life.
Marvie will be truly missed by many of us for her beautiful smile and endearing personality.
We love you and miss you, Marvie! May you rest in peace and live in our hearts forever.

Marvie could light up a room with her enthusiasm. She was always smiling and readily thinking of the needs of others. She did what she could to expand joy in the lives around her. I will always remember her love of the coastal cities, our shared love of good, quality candles and her green thumb. Marvie also impacted the lives of her students in a positive, impactful way that encouraged them to stretch themselves intellectually. I will treasure always the delight that Marvie brough to us, just by being her kind, giving self. Praying for the peace of the family and those that miss her presence.

I was deeply saddened upon hearing of your loss of Marvie. I will remember her as one who loved her family and, also, for her love of beautiful flowers. May God strengthen and comfort you during this time of bereavement.
With much love,
Aunt Beverly, Carmen, & Natalie

The memories I have with Marvie always bring me to smile and my heart flutters with love.. I am going to miss our upbeat conversations about how life can be a challenge and yet with our love to God and the amazing magical beautiful Universe has to offer .. we were able to laugh , cry and just simply sit in it and be in gratitude. Fly high Marvie into healing and be at peace wherever you be!

To Marvie's Family..
Some things in life are just difficult...actually too difficult! At age 78, I have learned that no matter how difficult, somehow there are blessings that help us come on the other side of that pain. Marvie was my 'Angel'....she was my blessing! At an early age (maybe she was 20) she entered my family's life. She became our babysitter and helped our pain! She helped us with our son who was compromised at birth and had many obstacles ahead of him! She became family and always remained family.
Marvie had many obstacles too...but she was already an 'Angel' She had the right heart, spirit and mind. With the strength of other angels around her, she too has been able to come on the other side of pain. During her latest difficult challenge with cancer, I'm happy to share, she had periods of smiles, hope and even laughter! She shared her enjoyment of Jamari and Devon's accomplishments especially with their incredible gift of their 2 children Esme and Thaddeus! She absolutely loved the joys that came with being a grandmother!!
I'm glad I had an angel in my life...I had Marvie!

Thinking of Marvie today. I did an activity today with my students that reminded me of her creativity as an educator and the wisdom she had imparted to me.
