My main interactions with Marty normally involved me requesting him to do something, (I am sure he knew when he answered the phone) he was one person, I was never afraid to ask as I knew the answer would always be ‘Yup you bet, I can do that Sarah.’
My favorite memory was when we were raising money for the grade 8 sailing trip last year and the kids had made chili for Winterfest. He came in the first day and dropped a much larger than normal amount of money for a small bowl of chili, the kids asked if he needed to change and when he said no, you should have seen their faces. The following day he came back with his family and dropped an equally outrageous amount of money and made a point of telling us that the chilli was so good, he told his family they had to try it. The kids were so proud of their chilli recipe and that someone thought it was so good he came back for seconds. Marty you will be so missed.

I didn’t know Marty well but my husband (Ed Gulka deceased) knew of how Marty cared for Sundre and the people. Rest in Peace Marty.

Marty was Sundre's official and unofficial hero. His kindness and willingness to help anyone in need shone through those kind eyes of his anytime you spoke to him. He always treated everyone (no matter their circumstance) with acceptance and kindness. Sundre lost a true hero and all those who knew Marty have a hero-shaped hole in their heart.

I was heartbroken when I heard the news of Marty's passing. Marty was the strength and a pillar of our community. He was everything good we strive to be. Having been blessed to work alongside Marty for a few decades I always knew we were safe and would be ok when Chief Marty Butts and his crews arrived on an Emergency Scene, he had an uncanny ability to put my heart at ease. Marty led by example always being exactly as he showed who he was. Marty never blinked when given an opportunity to teach or assist us with our leaning. I remember starting EMS and Marty taking time to explain so many basics of Fire’s role on scenes, he always included me in all their training never making me feel insecure or inferior. It’s not often you meet a person whose life is truly of service, Marty’s was. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered. We all are better for knowing and sharing time with Marty. Deepest Condolences and Love to Nicci, Marty’s family, fire crews and community. Rest In Peace Dear Friend.

I am so very sorry to hear of Marty’s passing due to such a tragic event . He was honestly one of the nicest people I have ever met. I worked for AHS EMS at the Sundre station for a couple of years before moving into a leadership role . Marty was always easy to work with and professional in managing any issues that arose . I always said he was one of the best Fire Chiefs I had the privilege to work alongside. His leadership made the Sundre Fire Department one of the best rural departments to work with. I am so glad I had the chance to cross paths and get to know him . My deepest condolences to his wife and family. I hope you can take some comfort in knowing so many people are sharing in your grief because of who he was as a person . All of us lost a truly wonderful friend and colleague . RIP Marty … you will not be forgotten.
