Martin's obituary

Martin J. Stein was born in the Bronx on December 3rd, 1931.   He grew up with three siblings, his older brother Herman (Roy), his older sister Ruth, and his younger brother Allen.

Marty was predeceased by his wife Esther; daughter Laura Schreiber; brother Roy; sister Ruth.  He is survived by his son, Steven, and wife Amy; brother Allen and wife Bobbye Stein; grandchildren Sarah, Jake, Max, Hannah, Eric, and great-grandchildren Cameron, Luke, Margaret, and Theo.

Martin was raised during The Great Depression period and was as tough as they come.   He was well known for being super pleasant, welcoming, and never EVER complaining.   All of his friends and family affectionately referred to him as "Sweetie".

In high school, Marty (age 17) met his soulmate Esther (age 15) - a Polish immigrant who fled Nazi-occupied Europe in July 1939 - through a mutual friend Arnie Weinbaum.  The two began their courtship in 1948 and were inseparable since.  Marty was a graduate of City College, NY, and entered the Army through the ROTC program.  He was stationed in Japan during the Korean war and rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant during his service.   Marty was a passionate fan of reading, opera, Frank Sinatra, cinema, Jeopardy, Bingo, fishing, antiques, gardening, and world travel.

Marty and Esther were married on Christmas Eve, 1952, and had two children, Steven and Laura.  They settled down in Brentwood, Long Island, NY, and built a wonderful home where they hosted countless holiday and family functions throughout the decades.

In the mid 90's they came to Deerfield Beach, Florida as snowbirds and fell in love with the weather, the people, and the vacation-like vibe.   They had many terrific years together based in Florida.  Their love for each other powered them through the good times and the bad.  Incredibly, they were both survivors of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.   After beating cancer, Esther eventually passed on January 20th, 2016.

Following her death, Marty spent 6 years in independent/assisted living under the wonderful, compassionate care of his aide, Cassie.   The two formed a special patient-caregiver bond and the Stein family is forever grateful for her years of service.  Marty passed away peacefully in his sleep at 2:15am on Sunday, January 1st, 2023 (Esther's birthday) just hours after a magnificent fireworks display filled the skyline.  In his final days, he was surrounded by loved ones near and far.
