I was sad when I heard the news of Martha's passing. My last fond memory of Martha was on July 2, 2021 in our Writing Memoir Friday class. Her topic was "I am Restless Because of my Lack of Independence." I commented on how "Blessed" she was to have a loving and caring family. I also said to her that she reminded me of a loving woman I loved, who would say she was also restless because of her lack of independence. I was always inspired when I heard her read her stories. What a remarkable woman, Martha Smith was, and her presence will be sadly missed in our class.

I will always remember and be inspired by Martha’s sharp mind every Friday in memoir writing class. She never missed a beat and offered relevant comments of encouragement. I also enjoyed Martha sharing her own memories. What a role model she was and will continue to be. Rest In Peace dear lady.

I remember Martha and Chuck coming to a Kinneavy (Cathy's family) yearly vacation to Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. Martha's infamous "Oh my garsh" was repeated constantly by all the kids. Everyone really enjoyed them being there.
Martha was the hit of her granddaughter Leigh Ann Smith’s Dec 2017 short You Tube video “All I Want for Christmas is a Groom” . I was honored to be an extra in this film, and had such a fun time with Martha during the filming of it in Cheverly. She was very funny and entertaining in it. Martha was one of the best people I’ve ever met—so bright, witty, and charming. My family and I will miss her smile and laughter. I’m a technological nightmare so if I’ve steered you to the wrong link, just type Leigh Ann Smith’s name into You Tube and the fun video will come up under her name.

I first met Martha during one of Cheverly’s Halloween parades. She was dressed as a bumble bee and clearly was having a fabulous time. As I came to know her, while visiting my mother-in-law at Collington, I realized that “having a fabulous time” was her default setting. Warm, kind and gracious come to mind when remembering Martha. I can only imagine how her family will miss her.

Even though she found technology maddening at times (like we all do), Grandma embraced anything that helped her stay connected to friends and family around the globe. In earlier days of email, she and Grandpa signed up for a WebTV account and would sit on their family room couch, typing out email correspondence on their big TV screen. More recently she spent hours each week on Zoom with family during the pandemic. Here she is with Chuck and grandkids Nikki and Justin, calling John and Pam in Hawaii (I think) over Skype one Thanksgiving.

Martha with daughter-in-law Cathy on a breezy, sunny Thanksgiving Day. Dinners at her home on Dolphin Lane were always special: Who else made sure to have Oh Boy Salad AND Jello among the other desserts?
