With full hearts and cherished memories, the family of Ivera Deloris LeGrand, lovingly known as Deloris, Ms. Deloris, Vera, and Aunt Ivera, announces her peaceful passing on April 14, 2026, in Brooklyn, New York. She was 80 years old.
Born in Smoaks, South Carolina, to Shellie “Shelly” Ruth Lawton and Marshall Lawton, Deloris came into this world so special that she was blessed with two birthdays—July 16 and July 27, 1945. From the very beginning, she carried a light that touched everyone she encountered. She was preceded in death by her brothers Gerald, Marshall, Alexander, John and Gary Lawton; Two sisters Vernell Simmons and Mildred Stokes.
Deloris built a life defined by compassion, service, and unwavering devotion to family. She became a Certified Nurse, a calling that reflected her natural gift for caring for others. One of the highlights of her career was her dedicated work as an elder-care nurse for the award‑winning Yiddish poet, author, and international artist Yonia Fain. Her kindness, integrity, and resourcefulness made her a trusted caregiver and a beloved presence in every life she touched.
But Deloris’s greatest achievements were rooted in family. She proudly raised four boys on her own and she poured her heart into being the mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and personal cheerleader that everyone depended on. She was the joyful center of her family, the one who made every gathering brighter and every memory sweeter.
She leaves behind her treasured sons, Cheountia Michael LeGrand, Jason Lawton, Sheriff LeGrand and Lateef LeGrand. Her Prized Grandchildren, Monica LeGrand and Nadeige LeGrand. Her beloved goddaughter Krystal Simmons, and a strong dedicated Coalition of Nieces and nephews, all of whom were constant sources of pride and joy.
Deloris lived a life full of laughter and connection. She loved spades, bingo, pitty‑pat, family gatherings, storytelling, reminiscing about the good old days, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her passion was simple and profound—Family. She was energetic, compassionate, honest, and full of integrity. Her resourcefulness and warmth made her a pillar of her community, where she served on the PTA and supported countless families with her steady presence and open heart.
To know Deloris was to love her. She was everyone’s favorite—favorite mother, favorite grandmother, favorite aunt, favorite friend. Her legacy is woven into the lives she shaped, the love she gave, and the joy she spread so effortlessly.
Though she has departed this earthly home, her spirit continues to shine through the generations she nurtured. Her laughter, her wisdom, and her boundless love will forever echo in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
