Marlon's obituary

Marlon Anthony Staples, affectionately known as “Beanny” by his beloved family and friends, passed away peacefully, at home, on July 5, 2025, at the age of 51. He leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and joy. Marlon was born a beautiful and special child in 1973 when medical professionals would commonly recommend infants born with Down Syndrome be institutionalized due to a lack of resources, services, and societal understanding. Marlon would go on to exceed medical expectations and bless the lives of all who knew him. His mother, supported by her loving family, made the courageous and compassionate decision to raise him at home alongside his older siblings. This decision, rooted in faith and love, became the foundation of a life beautifully lived.

Marlon’s early years were marked by medical challenges, including multiple surgeries within his first year of life. But true to his spirit, he never allowed his medical conditions or diagnosis to slow him down. With an insatiable appetite for life (and food), Beanny flourished into a joyful, independent, and energetic child.

Growing up in the 1970s and 80s, he played outside with his siblings, friends, and cousins for hours and could often be seen, riding his Big Wheel through the neighborhood. As a student, he attended Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Maryland, where he was part of a life skills and vocational program focused on socialization, independence, and preparing students for their futures. Marlon graduated in 1994, proud and accomplished.

Through this program, Marlon began his meaningful career in food services. He worked at McDonald's, Roy Rogers Restaurant, IBM Bethesda campus cafeteria, Miss Millie's Bakery (our family bakery), and later at a vocational day program. He took great pride in his work, showing up with dedication and joy every day.

Marlon was also a proud competitor in the Special Olympics, where he showcased his talents in bowling and the 50-yard dash, and earned many medals and trophies that he cherished and proudly displayed. He was passionate about professional wrestling, in particular the greats of the 80s and 90s, including Hulk Hogan, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Junkyard Dog, and Andre the Giant. Later, he became a devoted fan of Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and Triple H and would often quote them.

Beanny was also passionate about 80s and 90s R&B music, often carrying his headphones and a music player wherever he went. He loved video games and attending church on Sunday. He especially enjoyed dressing up for Sunday service and “looking handsome”. He often took pride in laying out his outfit for church the night before. Above all, he loved his family! Whether traveling (on a Carribbean cruise, to the Outer Banks or to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico), gathering with cousins, or spending time with nieces and nephews, Marlon was happiest surrounded by those he loved.

He was the embodiment of kindness and unconditional love. Everyone who knew Marlon was touched by his joyful spirit and the way he radiated warmth. His life was a masterclass in compassion, resilience, and how to love deeply.

Marlon is survived by his devoted mother Montressa and stepfather Alan Fisher; his Great Aunt Naomi "Nay" Ormond; uncles Gregory McConnell Sr.  and Horace Littlejohn III (Janet); aunts Phyllis Palm (Kenneth), Thelma Somers; siblings Monica Kemp (Russell), Maurice Staples Jr., Michelle Jones Kess (Kevin), Lashawnda Delaney-Brown, Cecily Staples, and brother-in-law Michael Glover. He is also survived by three nieces, five nephews, one great-niece, many cousins, extended family members, and cherished friends.

Marlon was preceded in death by his loving and devoted grandparents, Horace and Esther Littlejohn; aunts Kituria “Kit” McConnell, Millicent "Cee Cee" Wheeler; and his father Maurice Staples Sr.

A memorial service honoring Marlon’s life will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Providence Presbyterian Church in York, Pennsylvania.

Though he is no longer with us in body, the light and love Marlon shared with the world will remain in our hearts forever.
