Marlin Mayer, a man of gentle strength, profound kindness, relentless inquisitiveness and undeniable love, passed away on March 4, 2025 at Santa Maria Marian Medical Center, shortly after being diagnosed with metastasized stomach cancer. He lived a life brimming with warmth, creativity, and an everlasting joy that touched the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
Born to Herbert and Cleo (Deutscher) Mayer on November 15, 1956, in Bismarck, North Dakota, Marlin grew up on the family farm south of Streeter, North Dakota. After graduating from Streeter High School in 1975, Marlin attended North Dakota State University, all the while working on the family farm and for the railroad in Fargo.
In the late 1970s, Marlin moved to California, where he initially lived with his brother Lance on the San Diego Naval Base. In 1986, he met the love of his life, Linda who hired him to work as a gardener at Cal A Ve Health Spa in Vista, California. They moved to Los Olivos, California and married in 1988. Marlin had an unending passion for many hobbies, including beekeeping, sculpting, welding, pottery, woodworking, and computer building. As a gifted finish carpenter, his work left a lasting mark, with one of his proudest achievements being his contribution to Michael Jackson’s giraffe barn and theater. But beyond his professional accomplishments, Marlin’s greatest love was his family and the earth. He cultivated 40 acres in Tepusquet Canyon and nurtured flourishing gardens at every home, sharing his deep connection to the land and all its creatures. His love for life extended to every living thing, and his pets, especially his beloved dog Mailee, were cherished companions throughout his life.
