Mark's obituary
Mark Steven Weissenbach, age 72, passed away surrounded by family at his home in Midland, North Carolina, on January 17th, 2026. His warmth, humor, and zest for life will be deeply missed.
Born on July 15th, 1953, in Memphis, Tennessee, Mark was the beloved son of the late Argo Oliver and Ellen Camilla (nee Jensen) Weissenbach. Mark spent his childhood in Kansas City, Missouri, with his parents and four brothers.
A decorated multisport athlete at Oak Park High School (Class of ’71), Mark declined several scholarship offers to chase the California sun. After moving west, he began a career with Flying Tigers, which took him around the world. It was in California that he met his late wife, Cathy Jean Coulter. Cathy’s father, Jesse, was Mark’s boss and introduced them. They married on July 15th, 1972, and their journey brought them to Charlotte, North Carolina, where they raised their two sons, the pride and joy of their lives, Mark II and Matthew.
Mark was a constant fixture in his sons’ lives, whether he was coaching them on the sports field or taking them out on the water for a day of fishing. He was deeply committed to their growth, encouraging them to strive for professional success while emphasizing that being a good, principled human being was the ultimate achievement.
Mark's life continued to expand with Sandra Conklin of Midland, his loving partner of 26 years. He was like a stepfather to Nicole Hucke (James) of Raleigh, whose children, Brianna and Evan Hucke, knew him as a grandfather who was always ready with a joke or story. He was also like a stepfather to Kevin Conklin of Charlotte, whose kidney allowed Mark 19 more years to live life "the Mark way."
Mark was many things: a loving father and partner, a loyal friend, an animal lover, and someone with a knack for keeping things interesting. He was known for his love of the outdoors and natural athleticism, where he won countless fishing and golf tournaments. He had the opportunity to play golf with many star athletes, including Michael Jordan and Lawrence Taylor.
Mark's life was an adventure —sometimes outrageous, but always unforgettable—giving those around him endless laughs and stories. Even in his final chapter, he left his loved ones with an endless supply of tales. If you weren’t there yourself to witness it, you wouldn’t believe it. During one of his many hunting escapades, he accidentally shot out his own truck window! On a day of fishing, he once demolished a McDonald’s drive-thru passing through with his boat still attached to his truck!
Mark never met a stranger; his natural curiosity made it easy for him to listen and connect, and quick to offer a helping hand. If you met Mark, you never forgot him — and you probably walked away with a smile.
Mark is survived by his sons, Mark Steven Weissenbach II (Alicia) of Stanley and Matthew Earl Weissenbach (Lindsey) of Tampa, Florida; partner Sandra Conklin of Midland; his brother Kurt Edward Weissenbach (Michelle) of Moreno Valley, California; his loyal dog, Cooper, and granddog, Tucker, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cathy Jean Coulter Weissenbach; his brothers, Gary Lynne, Michael Alan, and Rex Martin Weissenbach; a lineage of much-loved pets, including Duncan, Duchess, Duke, Katie, Sadie, Susie, and Izzy; and granddog, Bella.
