Dr. Mark Weiss Shulkin died reluctantly but peacefully at his Bala Cynwyd home on Saturday, August 24. The beloved husband of Sunny (nee Edelman), father of Drs. Mark was a bright light for all who knew him.

He was a true pater familias and created a family tree that connected family members all over the world. As the family elder, he was the archetypal wise man and jester. A psychiatrist, as well as marital and family therapist, he impacted the lives of many. While there were many highlights, leading Couples Workshops, nationally and internationally with Sunny Shulkin, a Master Trainer of Imago Therapy, was top on his list.

Dr. Shulkin served as Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at The Medical College of Pennsylvania and at Hahnemann University, both of which merged with Drexel University Medical College where he was an emeritus professor.

From 1962-1971 he was the director of Liaison Psychiatry, supervising psychiatrists in Medical, Surgical, Radiology and Obstetric Clinics and he ran seminars in psychiatry for general practioners at Lancaster General Hospital and at Harrisburg State Hospital.

At Hahnemann University Medical College. he pioneered stage two and stage three research of psychotropic medications including the forbears of Xanax. He was a founder and board member of Alternative West High School (1972-1975) and director of the Department of Psychiatry at the Crozer Chester Medical Center (1972-1974).

He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Inc, an Approved Supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapists and a Faculty member of Imago Relationships International. Honors and awards included 50 years of Medical Practice by the Pennsylvania Medical Society, Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, President of the Delaware County Medical Society (1992) and editor of its monthly journal (1980-1992), chairman of the Mental Health Commission of the Pennsylvania Medical Society (1965-992) and member of its House of delegates (1992), the Impaired Physician’s Committee (1988-1992). To Sunny, Mark was a man for all seasons and sat by his side through every 76er season! He was a faithful fan. She feels blessed to have been with him for as long as she did. He will forever be remembered for his loving heart and was a constant source kindness to all who knew him. It is very hard to say goodbye to kindness.
