Mark's obituary

Mark Francis Leggett, born September 21st, 1958, passed away in his home April 24th, 2023 at age 64. He was loved by his neighbors in Kent, Washington and friends in California and beyond.

Mark was born and raised in Sacramento, and traveled extensively with his family. He gained a lifelong love of culture and music, never turning away the opportunity to crank up the stereo or hit a show. There was no distinction between fine art and lowbrow pop - if it showed its soul, it was art. Mark was truly punk to the core - living life in the moment and helping people in his do-it-yourself way. He was lively and made friends easily as he was so approachable and helpful. He painted his door red and kept a welcoming pineapple on the porch and never turned away a stranger.

Mark graduated Mira Loma High School in 1976, where he played varsity water polo. He began working the switchboards at Pacific Bell and worked there until retirement. If you used a phone in the Bay, chances are he had worked somewhere on its lines.

In 1984, he married Gloria Donovan and they had three children in Martinez, California before they separated. He passed his love of music, pop culture and nature to his children, taking them camping and hiking on weekends and sharing his favorite movies and music always. Yosemite always held a special place for him - Mark and youngest son Mike climbed Half Dome (most of the way) in 2007.

Mark started golfing with his parents after retirement and found both great joy and misery in the game - the beer and comradary were always a win, no matter the score. He was a spectacular cook, even if he never found quite the right recipe for his chocolate chili. He was a meat master, on the grill or low and slow in the oven. His tastes always ran back to the Bay Area, always chasing the perfect burrito.

Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Leggett, his father Richard Leggett and brother-in-law John Lui. He is survived by his children Alicen Leggett and her wife Jae Zamarripa; Rob Leggett and his wife Jeni, as well as Mark's first grandson Alex; and Mike Leggett; as well as his sisters Margaret Lui, Christine Jasper and Donna DePaula.

Services will be held in September in his home town of Sacramento. Please celebrate his life with the beauty around you - bring a loved one a bouquet of flowers, plant a tree, or hike through your favorite park. Celebrate with your favorite album or movie and a great drink. Go to a local punk show. Take a motorcycle ride through an avenue all lined with trees. Whatever you do, do it with lust for life. Picture Mark, and watch love grow forever.
