I miss Dr. Heaney.  His compassion, his professionalism and his intellect were unmatched.  He helped me enormously.   I feel the loss for his family but believe they will be together again, and he is guiding them through their lives from above.

I worked as Dr. Heaney’s medical secretary at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for one year in 2003. Dr. Heaney was the most lovely man and an incredible physician. He treated the rarest of the rare diseases and cancers and did so in such a kind and compassionate manner. While I worked for him he was also the head of the Fellowship program and his appreciation for furthering one’s education left such an impression on me that I decided to leave so I could return to school for my Master’s Degree.  Dr. Heaney took me out to lunch to celebrate my choice and to thank me for my work in my short time with him because he was just that kind of person.

I went looking online for Dr. Heaney after talking to someone about what I remember about Mast Cell disease from working with Dr. Heaney and that is how I learned of his passing.  I’m saddened to learn this and wanted to send my heartfelt condolences to his loved ones.

Mark, you are missed.  You were the smartest, most compassionate, chill doctor ever.

The favorite part of our visits was makg him laugh and distracting him from deep thought.

I think he liked it.

God I miss him.

I think about Mark very often.  He was truly an amazing Doctor .  We were so blessed to have his  thoughtful , kind , attentive care for my Dad . It was a blessing to have a Doctor who was so excellent,  and who truly cared for my Dad and our whole  family.    I feel so sad when I think of his passing , and his family.  . .  .      There are so very few men like him in this world.      Anthony Mortelliti , MD

Happy 66th birthday in Heaven Mark.  Heaven was made for people like you.  My health is declining and I have no doubt that it is because you are no longer here to perform the miracles I’ve always needed that you so mysteriously provided.  God bless your family
Today was the annual Velocity Ride. It is a bicycling fundraiser for Columbia’s Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. Mark used to participate in this regularly. Last year, in Mark’s honor, they created the Dr. Mark Heaney Hero Award.  This award is given to a senior fellow that embodies everything Mark stood for: scholarship, dedication to patients, and commitment to research.  This year the award was given to Dr Michael May. He was also Captain of the “Ride for Dr. Heaney“ Velocity Ride team.

Reflected on all you have accomplished at MSKCC and CUIMC, and our years working together at both, Mark. You are always in my thoughts, and you are missed tremendously.

I still can't find the words as it feels like yesterday.  Your patients miss you and speak of you often, we all miss you!  I know there is a beautiful place in heaven for all the good you brought into this world.  We still share stories of the incredible caring doctor you were.  There are moments when I hear your voice in my head telling me something I should or shouldn't do with a patient, I take comfort in knowing you are around and still close to all of us.  Sending big hugs and love to Tone, Thomas, Kristin and Katie.

Dr. Heaney had as much integrity as any one I ever met and I am forever grateful for his compassion and values as a person.

Mark was a great soul....

Mark was my doctor..and the one who saved my life..in 2021..thank you...robert karr.....

Happy Birthday Mark.  Your knowledge and compassion is missed.  It seemed that you had a bag of magic and nurses would say your were a miracle worker.  Your professors at UV may have given you knowledge but your true gift was the miracles you performed for your patients and that talent was God given.  I still miss you.  You were an inimitable human being.
The nurses would say he is a miracle worker.  Without him, my “numbers” have gone up.  He instilled such confidence and his care showed so much, that you had no alternative with him other than to get better.
Mark lives on in the lives of his family, his patients and all of us whose lives he touched and bettered.  I was privileged to room with Mark in college for 3 years.  He was a pillar of strength and decency.  And loved his New York Times & Baltimore Orioles!

Mark was a staunch supporter …
Mark was a staunch supporter of the Erhheim-Chester Disease (ECD) Global Alliance. He was the Chairman of their Medical Advisory Board for many years. In his memory, the ECD Global Alliance has set up an annual Mark Heaney Award for Awareness to be given to the person who has gone above and beyond to help raise awareness Erdheim-Chester disease. The first award was given at the annual ECD meeting held in Rochester, Minnesota at the Mayo clinic, on April 27. Mark’s sister, Gretta Heaney, and I attended the award presentation held during the evening Banquet held for medical professionals, patients and families. Thank you to the ECD community for their kind words and tribute to Mark’s memory.
