Mark's obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mark Hanlon, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, accomplished triathlete and marathoner and general lover of nature and adventure. Mark was born on April 2, 1959, and drew his last breath on July 11, 2025, leaving behind a life full of adventure and fond family memories.
Mark was one of seven children and is survived by his wife (Jane), his children and their spouses (Matthew – 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘺, Sara, Natalie – 𝘑𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘴, and Riley – 𝘈𝘴𝘩𝘭𝘦𝘺), his grandchildren (Zane, Maddie, and Carter), and a large extended family and community of friends. He is predeceased by his brother-in-law (John), sister (Kathy), his brother (John), his mother (Mary), and his nephew (Sean).
Mark graduated from Penn State University and was an enthusiastic fan of their football team. He was not only a brother but also a sage of Sigma Pi. Mark had a long and successful career with Exxon Mobil before retiring to his dream home in the mountains in Golden, CO.
As an adventure enthusiast, Mark completed marathons on every continent (including Antarctica). He was a true globetrotter, traveling to over 50 countries for “race-cations” with his beloved wife, and cheerleader, always by his side. His love of nature and hiking took him to over 130 national parks and all 50 US states, instilling a sense of wonder and appreciation for the world in his children. Mark meticulously documented his adventures with photo books and took dramatic shots from all over the world, rivaling the cover pages of National Geographic. Mark was also a competitive athlete, participating in hundreds of triathlons and marathons throughout his life, and has proudly raced for Team USA every year since 2015.
Mark collected many medals, but created even more memories. His legacy is one of adventure, love, family, and endurance. He had a long battle with cancer and gave it everything he had until the final finish line. He will live on in the memories he built with those he loved, and the adventurous spirit that lives on through his children and grandchildren.
