Mark's obituary
Mark was born on September 30th, 1948, to Edward & Velma Fanslau, and grew up in Midland Park, NJ. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1966-1970 and worked for PSE&G as an engineer until he retired in 2006.
An avid skier, outdoorsman, and grill master, Mark shared his love of nature and travel with his girls as they grew up, while never shying away from playing dress-up or "Pretty, Pretty Princess" with them. Mark was a devoted member of Holy Faith Lutheran Church, where he served on the Worship Board, participated in countless CROP Walks to help end poverty and hunger, and delivered presents to children of incarcerated parents every Christmas season.
Mark fought an 8 year-long battle with cancer and cherished every moment he was able to spend with the people he loved. His family will forever be grateful to the teams at the John Theurer Cancer Center and Hackensack University Medical Center for the care and compassion they showed a man who spent his life serving others.
In his final week of life, Mark was surrounded by his family and friends; neighbors, church members, work & skiing buddies, childhood friends... all of whom were considered family to him and will remain family to his wife and daughters. Stories of childhood pranks, world travel, and his "wild & crazy" days were exchanged and the room was filled with tears, laughter, music and a tiny glowing Christmas tree.
Mark is survived by his wife of 36 wonderful years, Alice, daughters Lauren & Michelle, son-in-law Caleb, granddaughter Annaleigh, sisters Carol, Ellen, and Lois, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and countless friends. He has joined many loved ones in heaven, including his mother and father (Velma and Edward), brother-in-law, Tom Rabenhorst, and sister-in-law, Peggi Grenon.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 4th, at 11:00am at Holy Faith Lutheran Church in Oak Ridge, NJ. It will be a celebration of a life well and lovingly lived. (Neck-ties are not encouraged as Mark believed them to be cruel and unusual punishment and he preferred to be "Forever in Blue Jeans.")
